Dive and Vessel Safety Officer

Dive and Vessel Safety Officer

Summary:

This position serves as a lead in the Dive and Vessel Department as a Dive Safety Officer and Vessel Safety Officer in the administration of Dive and Vessel activities carried out by the Alaska SeaLife Center.

Education/Training Requirements & Preferences:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Minimum of five years’ experience in dive and vessel operations at a university, aquarium, zoo, recreational, or commercial diving organization. Current Dive Instructor with a nationally recognized scuba certification agency. Current Divers Alert Network Instructor qualified to teach Diving First Aid for the Professional Diver. Desirable to have current repair and maintenance certifications for regulator repair, dive cylinder maintenance, and dry suit repair.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of OSHA Scientific Diving Regulations.
  2. Possess strong organizational, written, verbal, and excellent training and presentation
  3. Effective human relations and communication skills with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulations and other documents.
  4. Proficient knowledge of computers and typical production software (MS Office, Word, Excel, )
  5. Ability to work in both office and field environments. 

Essential Duties:

  1. Functions as a Dive and Vessel Safety Officer in the administration of underwater and vessel operation training activities carried out by the Alaska SeaLife Center.
  2. Maintains an active SCUBA Instructor certification and carries out both beginner and advanced training for ASLC Functions as a diver/dive tender during underwater activities carried out by the Alaska SeaLife Center.
  3. Maintains training logs, diving logs, equipment maintenance logs, and all required OSHA compliance documentation.
  4. Reviews and approves dive plans and diving equipment.
  5. Ensures compliance with ASLC and AAUS standards for safety training, and certification of divers.
  6. Maintains an active Divers Alert Network (DAN) Instructor rating and is qualified to teach the First Aid for Professional Divers course which includes First Aid, CPR (HCP-level), O2 Administration, and Field Neuro, and conducts this class for the divers when required.
  7. Performs routine maintenance on dive
  8. Supervises and approves all ASLC boating activities to ensure planning, adequate training and skills of the operators, safe and healthful practices, and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
  9. Reviews float plans and operations.
  10. Trains employees as operators and develops curricula to train operators capable of rendering all necessary boating and trailering educational services to the staff.
  11. Inventories, organizes, and secures all boating equipment in a safe and healthful manner according to regulation and standards, and dispenses equipment as needed.
  12. Services and repairs or secures services and repairs of all boating equipment in a timely manner according to applicable standards and regulations and maintains current logs reflecting all servicing and repair of equipment.
  13. Ensures the maintenance and repair of the ASLC fleet. Drafts annual proactive maintenance plan.
  14. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
  15. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Ability to swim and dive; see and hear; move about; stoop, kneel, and crouch; use arms and hands; handle objects, tools, and controls; and sit. Ability to lift and move 50 pounds. Ability to pass a dive physical.

"A regular employee in this position who is meeting expectations for the job performance will receive an annualized $4,680 salary increase automatically for the pay period starting on July 2, 2022.”
