Seasonal Hospital Assistant

Summary Statement

The City of Boise is seeking a compassionate and self-motivated individual to help support the animal welfare efforts at Zoo Boise. The Hospital Assistant position plays a critical role in the safety and efficiency of our Animal Care Program. 
This position:

  • Cleans and maintains animal hospital facilities, this includes sweeping, mopping, cleaning windows, organizing cabinets, and assisting in other duties when needed
  • Wash and sanitize dishes and buckets and assist in cleaning animal holding wards when needed
  • Works under direct supervision

Essential Functions

Cleans and maintains all building lobbies and entrances, this includes sweeping, mopping, removing cobwebs, and cleaning informational exhibit signs and doors. Cleans all windows, including windowsills. Stocks items such as medications, treatment materials, and other animal care items. Washes and sanitizes dishes, utensils, tools, animal holding areas and buckets. Assists animal hospital staff with equipment maintenance, inventory, stocking and cleaning animal hospital facility and area. (70%)

Assists veterinarian and/or veterinarian technician with procedure preparation including set up and clean up. (20%)

Assist staff members with animal encounters by sanitizing visitor's hands, helping with crowd control, and assisting in other areas when needed. (10%)

Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time. Total Percentage = 100%

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist, gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals.
This position works weekends, evenings and holidays as necessary.

Experience Required

Requirements Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training Experience working with small to large animals in a similar zoo facility or veterinarian practice High school diploma, GED, or equivalent Ability Display compassion for animals and insects Attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City of Boise employees and the public Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance Complete assignments in a timely fashion Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations Maintain prompt and regular attendance, and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation Licensing And Other Requirements Valid state-issued driver's license Proof of negative TB test in last 12 months or ability to attain upon hire Special Requirements Applicants must be able to pass: City of Boise background check processes including a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation Driving Record Check Drug-Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug-Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety-sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post-Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hiring. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test. This position is required to exercise custodial responsibility for illegal drugs or precursors. Working Conditions The physical effort characteristics and working environment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Physical Efforts While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 75 pounds. The noise level is frequently loud and occasionally moderate. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will stand, walk, reach and grasp. Position may be extended beyond temporary but will be 19/hrs a week.
