The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is a public-private partnership between the City of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit. The city owns and maintains the Aquarium’s buildings and provides administrative support while the foundation procures and maintains the collection of animals and exhibits. The foundation is also responsible for fundraising efforts and various scientific research, education, and conservation programs.

Vice President of Marketing (Aquarium Marketing Coordinator)

The Vice President of Marketing (Aquarium Marketing Coordinator) will lead the planning and development of all marketing and public relations activities for the Virginia Aquarium in order to drive attendance, enhance the brand, and increase overall revenues.

This position will manage the marketing and public relations budgets to effectively achieve all program objectives; develop marketing, social media and public relations priorities, goals and expected outcomes; and develop and monitor effective performance indicators and metrics to adjust strategies, goals, and expected outcomes, as needed.

This position will also lead efforts to develop and apply summative market research and predictive analytics to understand changing market dynamics and to effectively target marketing and communications strategies. Work closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and other Virginia Aquarium leadership staff to ensure alignment of marketing and public relation strategy with the department’s strategic plan and goals. Collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to enhance communications, develop partnerships, identify marketing channels, and build connections. Create travel and tourism related publicity opportunities.

This position will direct, supervise, monitor, and evaluate the performance of the Department’s marketing and public relations staff, including the Public Relations Manager, Brand Manager, Graphic Designers, Photographer, and Videographer. Serves as the primary liaison with the Department’s advertising agency of record.

May be required to occasionally travel overnight for conferences, professional development, and to represent the Aquarium at other functions. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and outside of scheduled hours when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.

Experience Required

MINIMUMS: Requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in marketing, public relations, tourism, business administration, management, museum administration, or related field; plus six (6) years of related experience; or any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to ten (10) years utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a valid driver's license.

Further Comments

The ideal candidate will have the following preferences. • Bachelor’s degree or higher in marketing, tourism, business administration, management, or related field. • Experience in a marketing role at an aquarium, zoo, non-profit, or attraction. • Five or more years of supervising and managing a marketing and public relations team. • Experience in developing and implementing social media strategy. • Experience providing creative art direction. • Experience developing and monitoring complex budgets associated with marketing and public relations programs.
