This position must be vaccinated or agree to become vaccinated for COVID-19, to work safely with staff and the animals under the Zoo’s care.
Under general supervision, the RVT assists the Zoo veterinarians in administering daily care and treatment of collection animals, in accordance with the Zoo’s veterinary program.  This position will also perform specific work assignments involving the care of animals at the Veterinary Health Center, as well as maintenance of enclosure, service, and holding areas as needed.
Supports and adheres to the Zoo’s program of veterinary care and preventive medical programs, by assisting with daily tasks, including:
  • Administering medications, according to established protocols and laws.
  • Monitoring anesthesia and assisting with surgical procedures.
  • Assisting with movement, capture and restraint of animals.
  • Performing routine laboratory processing analysis.
  • Monitoring health and welfare of hospitalized and quarantined animals.
  • Preparing instrumentation for anesthetic procedures.
  • Changing dressings and bandaging as directed.
  • Stocking medical supplies.
  • Assisting in maintaining the cleanliness and daily functioning of the veterinary hospital.
  • Adheres to all licensing, continuing education and supervision requirements as outlined in Missouri State RVT statutes.
  • Entering medical records on treatments and animal care tasks performed.
Assists with the daily care of animals at the Veterinary Health Center as needed, including:
  • Preparing diets for hospitalized/quarantined animals.
  • Ensuring daily animal husbandry needs are satisfied on the Veterinary Health Animal Care Specialist’s days off while providing input on husbandry, enrichment, and operant conditioning within the VHC.
  • Monitoring and observing the health and welfare of hospitalized/quarantined animals.
  • Reporting injuries, irregular behavior, death, or birth of hospitalized/quarantined animals to veterinarians.
Assists with maintenance of Veterinary Health Center’s enclosure, service, and holding areas as needed, including:
  • Ensuring VHC meets institutional USDA, AZA, AAZV and other guidelines for disinfection, pest control and grounds maintenance.
  • Reporting maintenance issues and potential safety hazards to supervisor.
*This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned, which are in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo.
    1. Associate’s Degree in Registered Veterinary Technology.
    2. Must be a licensed RVT in the state of Missouri by the time of employment start date.
    3. Successful completion of Veterinary Technician National Examination.
    1. Ideal candidate will have 1-year full time employment as a licensed registered veterinary technician, preferably in a zoological institution with a diversified taxonomic collection.
    2. Comprehensive knowledge of veterinary procedures and technology, including routine equipment usage and the application of technical skills.
    3. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office required. Familiarity with ZIMS software preferred.
    4. Knowledge and experience working with non-domestic animal species preferred.
    5. Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to understand/follow written and oral instructions.
    1. Must have valid driver’s license.
    2. Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
    3. Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
    4. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
    5. Must pass a background and drug screening.
    6. Must be vaccinated or agree to become vaccinated for COVID-19, to work safely with staff and the animals under the care of Animal Health.
