Biologist - Animal Health Division

Under the supervision of the Aquarium Medical Center Supervisor, the Biologist collaborates with the Aquarium's veterinarians and other Animal Health Department staff to operate the Aquarium's program of veterinary care. The level of the position will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

New England Aquarium has implemented comprehensive safety protocols for employees and visitors to minimize the risk of COVID-19 exposure. As a member of our team, you will be provided with the training and resources needed to ensure a safe and rewarding experience. In addition, the Aquarium requires all staff to be vaccinated and boosted (when eligible) against COVID-19 unless a reasonable medical or religious accommodation is requested and approved.

This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be 40 hours per week, working Sunday through Thursday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm. The position requires work at the Aquarium's main campus in Boston, and well as at the Animal Care Center in Quincy, MA. The flexibility to work in either location is expected based on the clinical workload and staffing needs.


  • Assists veterinarians with medical cases, including animal examinations, restraint, anesthesia, diagnostics, treatments, and necropsies.
  • Maintains and operates medical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, and environmental life support, (e.g. blood analyzers, radiography units, microscopes, wet/dry procedure table, filters, etc.); maintains and catalogs documentation of the proper use and maintenance of this equipment.
  • Maintains medical supply inventory.
  • Maintains accurate and complete medical records, images, databases, and information archives.
  • Monitors quarantine compliance by maintaining medical records and by scheduling/performing exams for animals entering and exiting quarantine.
  • Researches biological or medical information on cases and/or diseases. Corresponds with other NEAq departments or outside institutions when needed to gather or relay information concerning medical cases.
  • Performs weekly rounds with husbandry staff.
  • Maintains and manages clinical specimens for laboratory testing, research collaborations, and long-term sample archive.
  • Coordinates shipments of biological specimens.
  • Manages volunteers and interns to aid in the completion of essential job functions.
  • Performs water quality testing.
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned.


Minimum Training and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, veterinary technology, or closely related disciplines.
  • 2 years of job-related experience in aquatic animal husbandry or veterinary medicine.
  • Certified veterinary technician preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Veterinary experience including x-rays, drawing blood, processing blood samples for analysis, administering medications, calculating drug dosages.
  • Experience maintaining anesthesia for a variety of species.
  • Experience with biochemical testing.
  • Excellent math skills and computer skills.
  • Experience with medical diagnostic equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience maintaining medical records.
  • Availability to work weekends, some holidays, and occasional early morning or late night hours.
