Aviculturist I

An Aviculturist 1 is responsible for all aspects of daily care of our avian collection. They proficiently perform daily husbandry tasks, including administering vitamins and medications as directed, preparing food, and maintaining a safe and sanitary working area for all animal habitats. You will also help ensure guest, personal, and animal safety through diligent observation and response to any behavioral precursors of potentially harmful behavior by both animals and people.

What it takes to succeed:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma
  • Minimum of eighteen (18) months aviculture experience in professional zoological setting
  • College background in psychology, zoology or biology preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic math abilities
  • Ability to frequently lift, pull, and push 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, and work for prolonged periods of time in extreme weather
  • Scheduling flexibility
  • Ability to attain CPR certification
  • Ability to complete all legal, company, and department training requirements

Aviculturist 1 Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates moderate knowledge of avicultural skills, bird biology and natural history while performing daily duties and following department SOP’s.
  • Cleans, maintains, and enhances exhibits and support areas and works on team/individual projects.
  • Prepares diets and assists with daily feeding, monitors food intake.
  • Monitors mechanical systems of the various exhibits (i.e., lighting, incubator, hatchers...etc)
  • Conducts inventories and observations of birds daily and notes individual/population trends.
  • Learns and assists with various methods of bird banding.
  • Maintains detailed and legible records and assists with upkeep of band records/individual records.
  • Assists with upkeep of monthly food inventories/reports and egg logs.
  • Work with animals on basic behavior techniques and behavioral modification techniques with limited animals and under supervision.
  • Assists with tours, interactions and education programs.
  • Gives presentations to guests on avian management and natural history.
  • Learns proper handling and transport techniques and assists with in house moves and shipments out of the park.
  • Assists with veterinary treatments and procedures including administering topical, oral and injectable medications, tubing, capture and restraint and caring for all birds.
  • Learns and assists with wound cleaning and bandaging, broken blood quill removal, and nail/wing trimming.
  • Assists with the set-up for breeding seasons including the monitoring of nests, eggs and chicks in their exhibits, learns candling techniques and how to hand-rear species in the collection including tube feeding.
  • Learns and assists with EED’s and other techniques to ensure avian well-being.
  • Works cooperatively with other departments (W.Q., HVAC, Landscaping, other Zool. Depts., etc) as needed.
  • Trains junior staff on avian, exhibit and departmental protocols and SOP’s.
  • Learns/follows Dept. and SEA protocols and assists with P.R. events in park and in town.
  • Ensures safe work practices and procedures by following all departmental, SeaWorld and SEA policies.
  • Other duties as required.
