Supervising Animal Keeper

Specific Tasks & Responsibilities Include:

  • Carries out a regular scheduled program designed to insure prompt feeding, cleaning and care to animal collection as per an Animal Keeper
  • Effectively monitors health and behavior of the animal collection and communicate changes to veterinary staff.
  • Researching, planning, communicating, developing and evaluating current enrichment and training program that addresses the zoo’s needs and follows the policies and procedures in accordance with AZA and USDA guidelines.
  • Review and update behavioral enrichment goals based on observational research, literature reviews and keeper feedback.
  • Takes inventory of enrichment products making sure good working condition and orders new devices as needed
  • Collaborates with animal care staff to resolve animal behavior issues and welfare needs and concerns
  • Addresses welfare concerns and consideration in a timely manner
  • Evaluate current animal welfare program. Assess animal collection twice a year- taking pictures and documenting all findings from the staff and veterinary files to monitor changes in animal welfare. Present evaluations to Welfare committee.  Organize monthly animal welfare meetings to discuss staff and animal concerns in an open platform.
  • Reviews and approves all animal training protocols, monitors progress through observation and record keeping, provide monthly evaluations feedback to staff.
  • Coordinates with vet staff to prioritize veterinary needs within training program and incorporate vet staff into training.
  • Input on exhibit design ensuring that behavioral needs of animal is met
  • Schedule monthly meetings with Enrichment, Welfare and Training committees.
  • Maintain complete and accurate animal records
  • Maintain positive relationships within the work environment. Positively promotes and fosters work that improves department function and productivity.
  • Works to meet and exceed the AZA guidelines for animal welfare and enrichment. Supports the Bergen County’s Zoo vision and mission statement.
  • Required to further knowledge by attending AZA conferences, workshops and related courses to keep programs up to date with current practice.

 

Experience Required

Education & Experience: • BS. degree in biology, life sciences or related field • 5 yrs. Experience working in an AZA facility • Experience in Animal training, Enrichment and Welfare a must • Required Animal Keeper experience • Strong communication skills both written and verbal, computer literate • Knowledge of ZIMS • Ability to interact or communicate in English sufficiently • Valid NJ Driver’s License

Further Comments

Skills and Special Requirements: • Valid Driver’s License in NJ Must be able to work outdoors in all weather and have physical ability to perform strenuous work
