Human Resources Generalist

As a member of the Caldwell Zoo Administrative team, the Human Resources Generalist will perform daily operational human resource activities including recruiting and on-boarding staff, administering pay, benefits, leave, performance reviews, safety training, and company policies and practices.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains, updates, and assists in writing job descriptions.
  • Assists management team in recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of full time, part time, and seasonal employees.
  • Conducts or acquires background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
  • Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include safety training, first aid and CPR training, and workplace injury investigations.
  • Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, leave, and occupational health and safety.
  • Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations as requested by management team.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes in employment law.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommends best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.

Job Qualifications:

  • Related degree or certificate program in business, human resources, communications, etc., preferred.
  • Minimum of one to two years of HR experience or experience working with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, and an affinity to learn computer applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to be a self-starter with a positive attitude and work as a team player
  • Exhibit professionalism and confidentiality


  • Full time
  • Monday to Friday
  • 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Occasional weekend and/or evening work may be required
