For over 90 years, Utah’s Hogle Zoo has been a loved and trusted part of the community. Located within Salt Lake City proper, the Zoo is nestled in the foothills of the Wasatch mountain range at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. The Zoo spans over 42 acres and is home to a diverse collection of animals. Being only minutes from both a vibrant downtown and a national wilderness area, Salt Lake City is a dream for cultural aficionados and outdoor enthusiasts alike. This city has it all from professional sports teams, theater, cultural attractions, universities, nightlife, and lots of nature. From mountain ranges to deserts, Utah is home to five National and 45 State parks. Few places have so much, so close to where you live and work, but we pull it off with style and ease at Utah’s Hogle Zoo.


The Associate Veterinarian will provide high quality preventative health, medical, and surgical care to the Zoo’s resident animals, in conjunction with the Director of Animal Health. The Associate Veterinarian will provide the majority of the clinical care to the collection. The chosen candidate will be a valued member within a four-person Animal Health team and will work in the LEED Gold certified, 8000 square foot L.S. Skaggs Animal Health Center inaugurated in 2009. This position is a full time benefit eligible position.


Reports directly to the Director of Animal Health


  1. Support a comprehensive health program for all resident animals including but not limited to: quarantine protocols, vaccination, nutrition, pathology, therapeutics, contraception or reproductive support, surgery, dentistry, geriatric care, animal welfare, animal shipments, and diagnostics such as radiology, ultrasound, and endoscopy.
  2. Train and indirectly supervise two full-time Veterinary Technicians.
  3. Communicate with the Director of Animal Health, Animal Care Management and keeper staff regarding all aspects of veterinary cases. Collaborate on animal management matters and collection planning when requested.
  4. Help the Zoological Risk Manager and Safety Committee in aspects of animal and human safety. Train Dart Team members.
  5. Educate the staff on health topics (ex. zoonotic disease).
  6. Consult with Veterinarians and other Specialists when needed on medical cases. Develop partnerships to provide innovative therapy and care for the resident animals.
  7. Support the Zoo’s approved research projects. Conduct research and prepare materials for publication (textbook chapters, scientific peer-reviewed journals, other).
  8. Represent the Zoo to the media in print, radio, television and social media, including live broadcasts.
  9. Participate in a professional network (s) (e.g. AZA, AAZV) through committee work, presentations, and advisory roles.
  10. Comply with all federal, state, county and city laws, regulations and ordinances including DEA, OSHA, USDA as applicable to animal health and the handling of controlled substances.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience 

  • DVM or VMD degree from an AVMA accredited institution or equivalent.
  • Previous experience of at least one-year full-time employment at a Zoo or Wildlife facility (AZA accredited preferred). Time spent in an internship or residency is acceptable.
  • Clinical experience with terrestrial and marine mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians is preferred.
  • Must be licensed to practice Veterinary medicine within at least one US state or territory. Must obtain a Utah veterinary license within 90 days of employment.
  • Board Certification by the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) is desirable or to become Board Certified within 3 years of employment.
  • Must be an Accredited Veterinarian by the USDA.
  • Must possess or obtain a DEA license for controlled substances, schedule 2-5.

Work Environment

The Incumbent performs in an outdoor environment, and may have exposure to the seasonal elements, dust, and allergens for prolonged periods of time. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, which generally involve muscular strain. Eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions. Must be able to listen and respond to a handheld radio. Ability to stoop, bend, twist, turn, climb, jump, run when necessary, and move quickly to avoid dangerous situations. Must be able to walk on wet and uneven surfaces. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. unassisted and 75 lbs. with assistance.
