Wildlife Care Associate (Mammals) - San Diego Zoo Safari Park

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Wildlife Care Associate will support San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission of saving species worldwide by assisting the animal care staff in feeding and providing for the general care and welfare of the animals. They will also help to clean and maintain the habitats and share information. The Wildlife Care Associate will provide information and answer visitor questions regarding the animals. This position will report to the Lead Wildlife Care Specialist.

 

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Educates guests about animals and the mission of the Organization
  • Cleans and maintains exhibit areas
  • May assists in feeding animals under general supervision
  • Provides for the general care and welfare of exhibit animals under general supervision
  • Observes animals’ behavior
  • Reports abnormal conditions
  • Operates a variety of light and medium equipment
  • Model for punctuality and professionalism
  • Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics
  • Performs consistently above organization performance standards
  • Assists visitors by answering questions and providing information concerning animals
  • Prepares food and water for exhibit animals
  • Feeds and waters animals while also cleans exhibit areas
  • Secures exhibit areas at close of visitor hours
  • Cleans barn stalls and other animal areas
  • Helps maintain exhibit surroundings
  • Operates light and medium equipment such as dump trucks, skip loaders, forklifts, water trucks and other vehicles
  • Assists keepers in the performance of other, non-specialized and varied keeper duties
  • Provides exhibit security to prevent vandalism or mistreatment to animals
  • Observes animals with regard to general appearance, diet consumption, fecal matter, behavior, etc.
  • Performs minor repairs to exhibit structures and facilities under general supervision
  • Reports abnormal conditions
  • Serves as guide to visitors, answering their questions
  • Provides general information concerning animals and the Organization
  • Closely observes contact between visitors and animals, alert for problems and/or potential hazards to animals and visitors
  • Under general supervision performs minor repairs to exhibit structures and facilities
  • Reports the need for major maintenance and repairs
  • Under general supervision keeps records
  • Prepares regular and special reports that may be assigned
  • Adheres to all SDZWA and department policies and practices
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required

 

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is seeking friendly, cooperative, motivated and outgoing candidates.  Training and/or experience that would demonstrate the essential functions, knowledge and skills listed; Biological sciences and teaching experience in an informal environment are desired. Desirable qualifications for this position include knowledge of animal behavior and animal biology/zoology. A valid California driver’s license in good standing is required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Interested applicants must be available for work any of the seven days of the week. Scheduled hours will be approximately 40 hours per week.

  • Union Position: Starting hourly wage $22.14
