HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Scientist conducts independent and collaborative research in a specialized area of biological science, and/or develops and conducts disease diagnostics and risk assessments for application to wildlife health. This position reports to a Director level or higher in the Conservation Science & Wildlife Health department.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The Scientist will conduct research as part of the Conservation Genetics group in conjunction with the Wildlife Biodiversity Banking team to enhance cryobanking efforts for conservation. Work will focus on enhancing the capacity of SDZWA to comprehensively cryobank viable cells and tissues from diverse taxa with an emphasis on utilizing these materials for research and future genetic rescue. A strong background in cell/molecular biology to enhance growth and maintain viability and cellular function of the cells or tissues through processing and cryopreservation to ensure they are suitable for utilization in genomics research and reproductive technologies is required. A PhD degree in biology, bioinformatics, cell/molecular biology, or related field is expected of applicants as well as some postdoctoral experience. We are seeking a highly motived individual who will engage in research activities that advance knowledge of cell culture establishment, cryobanking, and assessment of growth and reprogramming potential through cell biology investigations.
The candidate may utilize a variety of techniques to explore cell growth, metabolism, and cryopreservation including but not limited to: RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, flow cytometry and/or FACS, immunocytochemistry, functional studies, proteomics, and comparative genomics/transcriptomics and bioinformatics approaches. The ability to synthesize the experimental results into protocol changes that will enhance biobanking capabilities is vital. The successful applicant will be responsible for initiating and conducting independent and collaborative research projects; overseeing and conducting data collection and analysis; publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals; presenting to professional groups and non-science audiences; preparing grant applications; administering and monitoring assigned budgets; supervising and training assigned staff; and mentoring students and volunteers.
The applicant must have the ability to take direction, follow through on assignments and work independently, but working as part of a diverse team is also essential. The applicant must also be adaptable to a dynamic workload, have critical thinking skills, and be neat and well organized with laboratory data. Schedule flexibility and the ability to work on weekends and holidays is also required.
