Director of Human Resources - San Diego Zoo

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Director of Human Resources strategically plans, designs, develops and evaluates human resource related initiatives that support our organizational strategic goals. The Director of Human Resources partners with team leaders on all aspects of workforce planning, employee engagement, employee retention, coaching/development, employee relations, compensation, leadership development, performance management, organizational effectiveness, and labor relations. This position reports to either the Executive Director of Zoo or Safari Park, with dotted line to Chief Human Resources Officer.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Hire, lead, train and manage a team of human resources professionals and support their professional development, training, and certification activities.
  • Partner with HR leaders who oversee San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance recruiting, talent acquisition, Affirmative Action Plan, EEO, classification, compensation, and performance appraisal programs.
  • Build and cultivate strong partnerships with all levels of the organization, utilizing people-related strategy and execution to ensure a high-performing, engaged workforce.
  • Conducts thorough investigations involving grievance, discrimination, threats, and other complaints, summarizes findings, takes appropriate action, and discusses trends and concerns with in house counsel.
  • Provide advice and counsel to managers and employees on all conflict resolution, performance related issues, performance management, and leadership development.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.
  • Make recommendations for proactive measures/solutions to address opportunities and trends impacting the operations and employee experience.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • JOB EXPERIENCE
    • Must have at least 7 years of experience in a leadership role in a Human Resources Department.
  • EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's Degree in business or personnel administration or a related field or equivalent specialized training required.
    • HR Certification by HRCI or SHRM
  • SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
    • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws, labor relations, and collective bargaining agreements.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
    • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
    • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly utilize HRIS and talent management systems.
    • Ability to effectively counsel employees and management regarding human resources issues.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in a diverse environment.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other organization software systems.
