Associate Veterinarian

Take the next step in your career by joining the team at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and grow your experience in Zoological Veterinary Medicine at a globally recognized conservation organization!  The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is seeking a full-time permanent Associate Veterinarian to join our dedicated team of animal health professionals.  The Associate Veterinarian will provide veterinary care and assist in leading the veterinary team in the care of our animal collection.

What you will do: 
  • May assist the Senior Manager, Animal Health with development, management and attainment of goals of the department 
  • May assume relevant departmental responsibilities when manager is absent 
  • Participate in our preventive health care program 
  • Conduct regularly scheduled vaccination and preventive care programs to maintain health of animals and guard against communicable diseases 
  • Conduct effective quarantine and appropriate testing procedures for all incoming animals, and carry out pre-shipment testing to ensure health of the collection, prevent spread of disease, and comply with government regulations 
  • Provide emergency medical attention to diseased or traumatized animals 
  • Provide 24 hour a day on call duties (shared) for veterinary care of the collection 
  • Maintain timely and complete medical records on all clinical and pathology cases 
  • Assist in nutrition and reproduction programs, and foster collaboration within institution and between institutions to achieve common goals 
  • May participate in exhibit planning and design, collection management planning, animal care meetings, interfacing with other departments as assigned by manager 
  • Assist externship program, and provide mentorship 
  • Assist internship program, and provide mentorship 
  • Assist pathology program including post-mortem duties 
  • Participate in research and conservation breeding projects in coordination with the Animal Care, Health & Welfare and Conservation Research departments 
  • May represent the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo on internal and external committees as discussed with and assigned by management 
  • Provide veterinary expertise when requested with respect to media relation issues 
  • May act as consultant and provide assistance to veterinarians in general practice and to wildlife professionals for treatment or handling of exotic animals/wildlife 
  • Other duties as assigned  
What you will bring: 
  • Must possess a DVM (or equivalent) degree and be eligible for licensure in Alberta 
  • Class 5 Driver's License 
  • Minimum 2 years of full-time zoological medicine experience 
  • Strong preference for completion of an internship and/or residency in zoological medicine 
  • Excellent communication skills in a team environment 
  • Must be able to establish and maintain an effective rapport with all levels of management, employees and park guests 
  • Must have good observational skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communications, organizational and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement independently and while contributing and participating in a team environment 
  • Ability to multi-task multiple different activities and prioritize among them to maximize the department’s performance 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word 
  • Experience with the Zoo Information Management System (ZIMS)   
Additional Requirements:   
  • The position requires inclusion on our tactical response team and so the successful candidate must possess or be eligible to possess a firearm Possession and Acquisition License 
Working Conditions:  
  • Involves outdoor work and heavy lifting 
  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb stairs and ladders, and carry up to 50lbs 
  • Exposure to fauna and pungent odours 
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather 
  • Working on some weekends and statutory holidays will be required
  • On-call work is required
