Relief Keeper - Terrestrial Department

The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the role of a Relief Keeper position with our Terrestrial Department.  This full-time position will report directly to and be supervised by our Senior Keeper and Terrestrial Curator.  The Greensboro Science Center is a 68,000 square-foot AAM accredited science museum as well as the 33,000 square-foot aquarium and also includes our 22-acre zoo.


The Relief Keeper will serve primarily as relief coverage for string leads and should expect to work with a wide variety of species representing many different taxa.  Collection highlights include small and large carnivores, varied herps and amphibians, some aves, primates, domestic hoofstock, and ambassador animals.  Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: following general husbandry protocols (diets, feeding techniques, cleaning, preventative health, operant conditioning, enrichment, etc.), exhibit maintenance, supervision of students/interns, and public education/interaction.  In addition, all keepers are expected to assist others in the shared responsibilities pertaining to common use areas, and provide back-up support of our children’s zoo and ambassador animal collections.  Skills associated with this position include strong observation skills, creative thinking, adaptability, and ability to communicate effectively.  A working knowledge of training concepts and application is also desired.  Ideal candidates will be comfortable in varied routines and able to adapt to instruction from multiple staff. 


Experience Required

The minimum education requirements for this position is an associate degree in zookeeping/animal husbandry or a B.S. in a related field from an accredited program; or equivalent years of work experience. Candidates should also have a minimum of 1 year experience working directly in animal care at a zoological facility and be well-versed in the particulars of general animal husbandry.

Further Comments

Keepers work outdoors in diverse weather environments, on varied terrain, and must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Candidates should expect to work a 40-hour work week including weekends and holidays. The salary range for this position will depend on experience and be accompanied by a full benefit package including medical and dental insurance, retirement, paid holidays, and annual leave.
