The National Aquarium is looking for an Exhibit Builder to assist in the fabrication and maintenance of interpretive (dry) exhibit components as well as live (wet) installations. This position reports directly to a supervisor chosen by the Director of Fabrication & Operations in the Planning & Design division and is part of a current team of exhibit builders. This position is paid hourly and wearing an aquarium uniform is required.
Qualified candidates should have previous experience in light construction techniques such as wood & steel stud framing, steel reinforced concrete, wood & synthetic finish and trim, paints and coatings, etc. Candidates must be experienced and comfortable with common woodworking tools and equipment. Candidates should also possess a good working knowledge of fasteners and adhesives, exhibit casework construction and repair, display lighting terms and techniques, etc. Requirements of this job include specialized vocational training or a minimum of 3 years practical experience in custom fabrications.
Job related tasks cover multiple disciplines using a wide range of materials and methods, such as (but not limited to):
• Cabinet building and carpentry
• Specialized mechanical hardware
• Fiber-reinforced plastic stock
• Polymer resin systems
• PVC plumbing
• Application of paints and coatings
• Electrical and electronic components
• Computer controlled and stand-alone display lighting
• … and more, etc.
Candidates must be able to follow directions and communicate effectively using notes and dimensioned sketches. Good problem-solving skills, thoroughness, attention to detail, and computer (PC) competency are required.
Candidates are expected to have documentation and photos of previous work.
Animal husbandry experience, a strong knowledge and appreciation of the natural world, fluency in a modern CAD system, and CNC knowledge are all a plus. Also desirable is any knowledge or experience with DMX, WDMX, Networked DMX (ArtNET & sACN), MS Windows Networking, TCP/IP, etc.
