Life Support Technician


Reports To:    Curator of Mammals

Location:    Audubon zoo

General Summary:  

This position shall be responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of Audubon Zoo’s sea lion life support facility.  These duties include, but are not limited to, the operation, monitoring and maintenance of all associated equipment (pumps, filters, chillers, ozonators and plumbing), backwashing, water changes, water quality, etc.  General maintenance duties such as raking, power washing, painting, etc. are also necessary components of the position.  The candidate will also assist with overseeing the expansion/renovation of the sea lion life support system.

To deliver on the Audubon mission, the Life Support Systems Tech will: 

 

Provide a guest experience of outstanding quality.

•    Working knowledge of and the ability to troubleshoot and repair the following: pumps, filters, chillers, ozone generating equipment, chlorine systems and biological filtration systems.  

•    Maintain LSS logs and records as needed.

•    Perform water quality tests.

•    Understand/interpret water quality reports/results and ability to make recommendations and adjustments to pool chemistry as needed.

•    Maintain excellent communication with sea lion trainers and supervisors, facility staff, outside contractors, consultants and senior staff.

 

Exhibit the diversity of wildlife.

•    Maintains high water quality for collection animals.

•    Walk individual to destination instead of pointing; offer assistance to people who look confused.

•    Assume ownership of potential safety hazards (wipe-up spill, pick up trash).  Always have the camera-ready look.

•    Follow Dress Code Policy on clothing and grooming.

•    Keep unpleasant concerns behind closed doors (vent backstage).

Supervision:  N/A 

Experience:  

 

•    Expert plumbing skills are a must.

•    Minimum of two years of applicable experience is required, preferably in a zoo or aquarium setting.

•    Ability to swim necessary

 

Education: 

 

•    High school diploma

•    Bachelors preferred 

 

Licensure/Certification: 

 

•    Must maintain a valid La. Driver’s license

•    Scuba certification a plus

 

Software Requirements:  

 

•    Proficiency in basic computer word processing

Machinery/Tools/Equipment Requirements:  

•    Must have the ability to use mobile devices, computer, fax, scanner, phone, and copy machine.  

•    Ability to operate power tools, fork lift, bobcat and backhoe.  

•    Ability and willingness to operator power tools, lawn equipment, etc. 

Physical Requirements:

•    Long hours are sometimes required.  

•    The employee must be willing to work outdoors in extreme conditions.

•    Sitting or standing, bending, stooping, and per OSHA regulations:  Heavy work involving lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds

•    Candidate must maintain regular attendance in compliance with Audubon standards, as required by scheduling which may vary according to the needs of the organization.    

•    Constant adequate range of motion and mobility required.

•    Regular near acuity with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less required. 

•    Regular hearing and the ability to perceive the nature of sounds.

•    Assist with husbandry routines as necessary.

 

 

Environmental/Working Conditions:

•    Working long hours between breaks or meals required.

•    Ability to work under and handle stress in an appropriate manner required.

•    Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather.

•    Willingness to serve on the zoo’s Hurricane Team if necessary.

•    Maintain off-exhibit areas in a clean, organized and safe fashion.

•    Excellent oral and written communication skills.

•    Must be available based on special needs/circumstances on a 24 hour basis.

•    May be exposed to high, medium, or low noise intensity.

•    Constant contact with co-workers required.

•    Affinity for animals preferred.
