Animal Care Professional - Reptiles Part Time

The Naples Zoo is seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic individual to join our Reptile Department. The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in reptile biology, husbandry, and pertinent conservation issues. This person will assist with the daily care of reptiles and amphibians including venomous snakes, large pythons, and crocodilians. As part of the reptile department, they will also be responsible for daily public presentations using a variety of reptiles in different settings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • General husbandry and care of assigned animals.
  • Close observation of animal behaviors to monitor health and wellbeing.
  • Transfer and handle a variety of dangerous reptiles for husbandry and presentation purposes using proper techniques and tools to ensure safety for guests, animals, and staff at all times.
  • Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain both exhibit and off-exhibit areas.
  • Propose and perform species-specific enrichment.
  • Interact with guests during both formal and informal presentations including snake presentations and alligator training sessions.
  • Assist in animal procedures including translocations, immobilizations, crating, and veterinary procedures.
  • Respond to and assist management in guiding the resolution of emergency situations within the zoo.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This is a part time (24 hours per week), permenant position.

EXPERIENCE

Must possess a combination of education and experience that adequately prepares them for the job as detailed above.  

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Minimum 18 years old.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team.
  • Must be self-motivated and goal-oriented.
  • Must be able to use a bicycle or tricycle.
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings. 
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions including rain, wind, extreme heat and occasional cold.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 65 pounds, stand for long periods of time and drive Zoo bicycles.  The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, reach or feel and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to sit, walk distances, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel and crouch.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
