Registrar Internship – Spring 2022

Registrar Internship – Fall 2021

The registrar intern will be given an overview of records and permits required for Zoological operations. The intern will learn to navigate and use ZIMS, the animal record keeping software used by the Dallas Zoo. Additionally, a project will be assigned for data collection, most likely from historic animal records. Depending upon the scope of the data retrieved, the data may be organized into a spreadsheet, WORD document or directly into the animal record database. The project may be one designated of high immediate need for husbandry reasons at the time of the internship or be of general husbandry importance to mine historic data for trends and information. Interests and background of the individual intern will be taken into consideration. 
Educational value:
· Zoological Record keeping overview (beneficial for multiple career choices)
· Federal and State permit overview
· Introduction to basic animal husbandry data.
· Potential species specific components: Rearing/neonatal development progression
· Several historic events to be researched and entered to add to the collective knowledge base.
· Animal introductions
The Dallas Zoo College Internship Program provides a learning opportunity for currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited college/university in the United States. Interns become actively involved in the Zoo’s animal care departments, conservation/research efforts, operations, and/or administrative positions.
Interns work 20-40 hours per week for a maximum of 12 weeks. Each placement is designed to help the intern gain experience related to their education. Most internship positions are unpaid. The Zoo does not provide transportation, housing or a stipend.
All interns will be required to complete an educational project, participate in at least one service learning project, and attend professional development sessions designed especially for Dallas Zoo interns.
The Dallas Zoo Volunteer Services Department will work with students/schools to document internship experience needed to gain university/college credit.
Must have a working computer with webcam and microphone, as well as consistent online access. This position requires extended working periods of desk and screen time.
Internship requirements:
· Current college or university student or applications submitted within one year after graduation
· Ability to work 20 – 40 hours per week for 12 weeks
· Must have a working computer with webcam and microphone
· Must have consistent internet access
· Candidates selected for internship must pass background check and TB test.
· Must be otherwise eligible to work in the U.S. at the time of the internship
