Alaska Zoo


Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Curator is responsible for managing the zoo’s animal collection, overseeing husbandry staff and working closely with the zoo veterinarian to ensure the health and safety of the animals in our care. This position also plays a key role in the Alaska Zoo Management Team.
·         Maintains accurate records of animal acquisitions, transport, veterinary treatment and similar information and activities. Record keeping will be maintained in compliance with all regulatory agencies.
·         Coordinates and maintains all State, federal or other necessary animal collection permits.
·         Assists in determining the health of the animal collection and coordinates visits and care with the zoo’s consulting veterinarian.
·         Provides oversight and direction to husbandry staff, including scheduling, training and coaching. Works with Human Resources to recruit, select, hire and employ.
·         Manages and directs summer intern program, with assistance from Deputy Director.
·         Participates with Zoo Director on management and improvement of the zoo collection plan and exhibits/habitats.
·         Interfaces with public and media to provide information on animal collection.
·         Work with the zoo’s marketing team to prepare promotional materials featuring zoo programs.
·         Assists as needed for daily zoo operations, special events and educational opportunities.
·         Other duties as assigned by Zoo Director.
·         Minimum bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology, or related field and a minimum five years’ experience working in a zoo or aquarium.
·         Ability to evaluate and supervise animal care staff. Two (2) years in a supervisory role is preferred.
·         Ability to work evenings, weekends, and special events as needed.
·         Excellent written and oral communication skills.
·         Must have basic proficiency with MS Office Suite.
·         While performing the duties of this job, employee would be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls.
·         Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
·         Ability to work in Alaska weather extremes.
