Construction and Maintenance Manager - San Diego Zoo

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Construction and Maintenance Manager will support San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission of saving species worldwide through the construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance of facilities. This includes buildings, habitats, roads, electrical, lighting, plumbing, mechanical, drainage, and environmental systems. This position will report to the Facilities Director.

 

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Coordinate contractors
  • Prioritize work orders and monitors job progress
  • Check work quality and verify job completion
  • Act as construction coordinator for new projects
  • Coordinate construction needs with affected departments
  • Prepare project plans and proposal request specifications
  • Obtain contract proposals and negotiate contracts
  • Participate in the development of assigned budget
  • Assure venues are properly prepared for special events
  • Conduct safety inspections of facilities
  • Track and manage assigned budgets
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required

JOB EXPERIENCE

  • Ten years’ experience working as a skilled trade’s person including, but not limited to: Welder, Carpenter, Electrician, Plumber, HVAC or other related field or
  • Ten years’ experience in the construction industry required
  • Familiarity with primary electrical distribution
  • Experience working with represented labor is preferred

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Coursework in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a related field of Architectural training or coursework is preferred
  • Current and California driver license in good standing is required

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Building trades, tools, equipment, and materials
  • Building and safety regulations
  • Inventory control practices
  • Work with teams and effectively with others in a diverse environment
  • Plan and estimate construction work
  • Prepare bid requests and purchase requisitions and to evaluate proposals
  • Understand union contracts regarding labor use restrictions
  • Use automated work order, word processing, and spreadsheet systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
