Conservation Coordinator

The Little Rock Zoo and the City of Little Rock is seeking a qualified individual to continue to develop an effective conservation program at the Zoo to increase public awareness, education and participation of wildlife conservation initiatives and sustainability practices.  This individual will work with both our local wildlife partners and our global wildlife partners to ensure funding and employee participation are align with the Zoo’s overall conservation plan.


  • Develops partnerships and coalitions for the Little Rock Zoo by coordinating and developing relationships with various wildlife management agencies, non-governmental organizations, non-profit organizations and community scientists to promote and further the mission of conservation and sustainability.
  • Develops short and long range strategic goals and objectives relative to the Zoo’s conservation action plan; ensures goals and objectives align with the Zoo’s overall mission and vision and is in compliance with AZA guidelines and standards; makes recommendations to Assistant Director of the Zoo to modify goals and objectives as necessary.
  • Identifies, reviews and assesses the Little Rock Zoo’s current conservation and sustainability practices; conducts surveys, studies and other research to stay abreast of best practices, changes and trends relative to conservation and sustainability standards and practices; compiles information and makes recommendations to Assistant Director of the Zoo; implements upon approval.
  • Serves as the Zoo’s liaison with various conservation partners for wildlife conservation and sustainability efforts to ensure employees and the public are aware of efforts and volunteer opportunities; coordinates with supervisors to allow for employee participation; ensures conservations partner programs are aligned with the Little Rock Zoo’s conservation and sustainability mission.
  • Coordinates with Education Division to integrate conservation and sustainability initiatives, programs and efforts into Zoo education programming, activities and special events to ensure the public is kept informed about conservation issues and sustainability efforts and benefits; coordinates or develops information to increase awareness and participation in zoo conservation activities.
  • Serves as the Zoo’s liaison with City sustainability boards and commissions, committees, and conservation minded organizations throughout the City to integrate the zoo’s sustainability mission and vision into the community.
  • Provides assistance to the Zoo Development and Marketing Coordinator in conducting research to identify various public and private funding and grant opportunities to support conservation programs; compiles information and completes required documentation as needed.


  • Knowledge of Association of Zoos and Aquariums principles, practices and standards relative to wildlife conservation and sustainability.
  • Knowledge of wildlife conservation initiatives and sustainability practices relative to animal care and zoological management.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations related to sustainability and conservation programs.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of conservation, sustainability, sustainable living and related green practices.
  • Knowledge of conservation and sustainability issues, laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of research methods and techniques.



Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree in a science or administration with an environmental focus. Two (2) years of experience developing or coordinating conservation and sustainability programs or similar wildlife management programs.
