Primary Purpose of this Position:
The North Carolina Zoo is seeking a qualified, self-motivated, and team-oriented commercial HVACR Mechanic to perform analysis and technical work on the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.  This position independently troubleshoots HVACR issues, identifies and requisitions needed parts, performs repairs, and instructs and/or trains others in repair.  This position often serves as a technical expert in HVACR.  The Zoo's HVACR systems are varied in complexity from simple residential units to commercial/industrial units providing comfort conditioning as well as process cooling/heating that replicate environments natural and unnatural to Piedmont North Carolina.  This is a lead position that reports to the Plumbing, Mechanical, & Electrical Supervisor.  This position has oversight and performs all aspects of computerized control, monitoring, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and installation of HVACR systems including chillers, boilers, air handlers, heat pumps, mini-splits, furnaces, heaters, exhaust fans, hydronics, pneumatics, refrigeration, electronics, and electrical systems.  This position is responsible for maintaining the Zoo's refrigerant log.  This position works a weekend and holiday on-call rotation and will be assigned extra on-call assignments as needed.
 
Job Requirements:
  • Must be available to work after hours and weekend hours when necessary and available for on-call and emergency call-back within 45 minutes.
  • Position is considered "Essential/Mandatory Staff" and required to work on adverse weather days, during zoo emergencies, and may be called to work special events.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 30 days of employment.
  • Must have the agility and physically ability to regularly and safely: lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally; bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; stand for the majority of the day; endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles at day and at night.
  • Required to participate in the Zoo's occupational health program due to exposure with animal containment areas.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.

The North Carolina Zoo exists for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of all of North Carolina's citizens and visitors to the zoo. The primary purpose of the Physical Plant Maintenance Section is to maintain Zoo facilities and equipment to keep them in good condition and proper working order. This section will construct small structures such as animal caging, decking, and small building structures, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, physical plant maintenance and vehicle shop. It is responsible for seven major exhibit buildings, five restaurants, three gift shops, ten sets of restrooms, three support buildings, seven greenhouses and numerous animal holding areas. It is also responsible for servicing and maintenance of all equipment including trams, buses, trucks, vans, utility vehicles, tractors, bobcats, mowers, welders, and blowers and a variety of other equipment as well as minor painting and paving repairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrated working experience with refrigeration theory and the practices, methods, materials and equipment used in the operation, maintenance and repair of residential and/or commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with various heating systems including heat pumps, gas heat, electric systems and duct heaters.
  • Proven knowledge of the design and operation of various compressors including rotary, scroll, reciprocating, and centrifugal.
  • Demonstrated experience with complex electrical control systems to expertly troubleshoot and perform repairs.
  • Demonstrated experience with electrical wiring systems from unit to breaker panel to troubleshoot, repair, replace, and/or install wiring and components.
  • Demonstrated experience with computerized building automation systems and components with the ability to diagnose problems, temporarily override, manipulate, and control the system.
  • Demonstrated experience with the design and operation of HVAC equipment and pneumatic & electronic control systems, including diagnosing equipment malfunctions and prescribing and performing repair procedures.
  • Proven knowledge of NC Mechanical Code, NEC, OSHA Requirements, and EPA regulations pertaining to HVAC.
Management Preferences: 
  • Must have very good written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be skilled in reading and analyzing technical drawings (blueprints) and specifications to research information and perform design reviews.
  • Experience in using computers for record keeping, email and time recording.
  • Experience in using computerized work order systems.
 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems including one year at the journey level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
