Zookeeper Supervisor M13 - Primates

Position Summary

It is the responsibility of the Zookeeper Supervisor to supervise, assign, schedule, review and participate in variety of ABQ BioPark services, activities and operations, including the work of staff responsible for the care and maintenance of a variety of zoo animals; ensuring work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility; provide highly-responsible and complex staff assistance to higher level management staff of the ABQ BioPark.

  • Animal husbandry techniques
  • Operations, services and activities of a zookeeping program
  • Advanced principles and practices of zookeeping and exotic animal care
  • Principles and methods of mechanical incubation
  • Methods and techniques of handling assigned animals
  • Proper diets and feeding requirements assigned of animals
  • Principles and practices of animal behavior and physiology
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Safe work procedures when around animals
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations regarding the acquisition, care and transportation of exotic animals.

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the ABQ Bio Park
  • Professionally represent the ABQ BioPark in all interactions with visitors, staff, media and other groups
  • Serve as an ambassador for the ABQ BioPark and its programs to the media, visitors, staff, the AZA and other outside agencies.
  • Organize and coordinate various animal care functions
  • Oversee the daily monitoring, feeding and cleaning of exotic zoo animals and their enclosures
  • Participate in hand-rearing of a variety of animals
  • Supervise, organize and review the work of lower-level staff
  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff
  • Work with a variety of domestic and wild animals
  • Uphold all ABQ BioPark safety and personnel protocols
  • Ensure adherence to proper dietary measures and feeding requirements
  • Respond to animal emergencies and take appropriate action
  • Oversee pest control in and around animal exhibits and buildings
  • Interpret and explain ABQ BioPark policies, procedures and protocols
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Experience Required

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in zookeeping, animal science, or biology; and Two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following areas: exotic animal husbandry zookeeping arthropod rearing; and To include one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience. Experience working in an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facility preferred.

Further Comments

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire. Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
