Elephant Keeper

The Indianapolis Zoo is a national leader of animal conservation, and one of the top tourist destinations in Indiana.  We’re located on a 64 acre campus in the heart of vibrant downtown Indianapolis.  In addition to our animal exhibits, gardens, and aquarium, we support local and international animal conservation efforts.   Your passion for animal conservation, and your particular area of interest and experience in African elephants may qualify you for our full time Elephant Keeper position in our Elephant Department.  We have a progressive and internationally respected elephant program, and have conducted pioneering research in training, reproduction, and artificial insemination. 

The ideal candidate is committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.  Prior professional work experience working with elephants is required, prior experience working with African elephants and especially elephant births and calves is preferred.  The successful candidate must have at least two (2) years working at a Zoo or animal care related organization.  This position is primarily responsible for all aspects of the elephants’ well-being and care, developing and implementing enrichment activities and participating in research, education, and training. This position requires a lot of flexibility, flexibility to work cohesively with a small team as well as the flexibility to work differing shifts such as overtime, weekends, and holidays.

Working with elephants requires a very specific skills set and strenuous physical responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Assists with research projects and exhibit modifications.
  • Displays a professional attitude and appearance to visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Physical strength and stamina with the ability to perform very heavy work, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. 
  • Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
  • Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio and telephone.
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record that is insurable by our carrier.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment testing including a criminal history and driving record check, and a drug test. The Indianapolis Zoo is requiring all Zoo employees and volunteers to be Covid-19 vaccinated unless individuals require a medical or religious belief accommodation.  If hired, vaccination must be completed prior to first working day or accommodation request must be approved prior to first working day.
