Director of Horticulture

San Antonio Zoo of San Antonio, TX, is looking to hire a full-time Director of Horticulture to join our zoo family! San Antonio Zoo is comprised of over 54 acres. The Director of Horticulture oversees all initiatives related to the zoo grounds. In addition to maintaining the Gardens, the Director of Horticulture provides vision and execution for special events involving plants, flowers, and topiaries; if you're interested in a new challenging environment, working at the Zoo would be perfect for you! We are a year-round operation; this position requires a flexible schedule to work weekends, holidays, and occasionally after hours for special assignments. Our Gardener work schedule is 6 am to 3 pm, a rotating weekly schedule, and the compensation for this position is 55k or greater, negotiable based on experience.

As a Director of Horticulture is responsible for managing and evaluating all horticulture staff; developing and maintaining the zoo's botanical collection, including the greenhouse/nursery production; coordinating the browse program; the management of a safe, legal, and humane integrated pest control program for both structural and grounds pests. Will collaborate with other Animal Care Directors to ensure the harmonious operation of the department. As a Director of Horticulture will collaborate with other zoo departments to ensure the successful operation of the zoo. In this role, you will be responsible for creating and managing the horticulture master plan.

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in plant biology, physiology, biological sciences, agricultural sciences, horticulture, agriculture management, or work experience equivalency.
  • Five years of successful horticulture experience.
  • Five years of leadership experience in management or supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of large-scale commercial plant cultivation, including but not limited to nutrient requirements, growing media, light requirements, temperature control, and airflow
  • Experience with compliance systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially when dealing with plant health and data tracking.
  • Good attention to detail and ability to produce work quickly, accurately, and independently.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to accomplish company objectives with either direct or indirect authority.
  • Effectively lead, encourage, and motivate teams of employees to complete critical and challenging projects.
  • Excellent prioritization, planning, organization, time management, and multitasking skills.
  • Establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with team members.

  • Expert knowledge of plant diseases, insects, and fungi, as well as plant treatment options
  • At least 5 years commercial growth experience
  • Experience in a position requiring critical thinking, problem-solving, planning, and assessment
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
  • Valid Texas driver's license or obtain within 3 months of employment.
  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment National Sex Offender Search, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Screen.
