Digital Content Specialist

This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society (“CZS”) by increasing awareness of CZS in support of a Sustainable Future, Extraordinary Guest Experience, and Innovations in Science, Education, Training, and Animal Welfare.

Job duties and responsibilities:

Responsible for the development and execution of internal communications such as The Bridge, BZ Communications, e-newsletters to members, and marketing email campaigns. Publishes communications according to established guidelines and deadlines. Writes, edits, and revises communications to ensure clarity of expression, editorial consistency, and consistency of messages substance, style, coherency, accuracy, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.  Responsible for internal communications to employees and other key internal constituents including trustees, volunteers, etc., through print, web and audio channels

Manages institutional and departmental content and marketing and public relations notices on the CZS Website to ensure accuracy, and that the CZS mission is properly communicated.  Supports public relations and social media efforts.  Ensures the CZS Website is accessible and in compliance with the American Disabilities Act as amended.  Serves as administrator and copywriter for social media sites.  Works with external agency and content producers to schedule social media initiatives. 

Works with other departments such as Animal Programs and Conservation, Education and Training to coordinate social media calendar and digital content. Develops communication and promotion plans and strategies and executes finished plans.  Also responsible for promptly addressing guest feedback on social media channels. 

Interviews, hires and supervises assigned staff, including but not limited to:  selection, orientation, training and development, performance coaching and accountability, management, performance reviews and recommendation of appropriate employment actions.  Other related duties as assigned. 

Experience Required

High school diploma or (GED) equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Marketing or another relevant field or eight years of equivalent experience. Proven experience in maintaining Kentico and Wordpress sites. Experience in using google analytics and search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO). Experience in content marketing, social media, SEO, digital marketing, online content management and developing social media campaigns. Strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills. Proven eye for detail, completeness, and accuracy. Strong competence with PCs and Macintosh computers required. Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, mass email communications, social media and website content. Must be a team player with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (verbal written, listening skills). Must maintain the confidentiality of privileged information. Ability to work under pressure, meet critical deadlines, and be able to deal with emergent issues, multiple projects, and clients. Must be flexible, adaptable, and comfortable in a dynamic, fast-paced organization. Must be trustworthy and self-motivated. English fluency at a full professional proficiency required. Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience. A valid driver’s license is required at time of hire. Desirable/preferred: Significant coursework in biological/ zoological sciences strongly preferred. Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.

Incumbent must be able to take initiative to build and maintain strong rapport and positive relationships with staff. Must be proactive with respect to communications and Society publications; helpful, patient, and persistent, particularly given the repeated revisions frequently involved with individuals in preparing and finalizing articles and content. Incumbent must gain an intimate understanding of the Society’s mission, vision, values and philosophies, and its communications needs and objectives. Must have a commitment to promoting the Society’s image and to maintaining high standards of professionalism. Must gain an understanding of how communications and CZS departments impact the messages communicated to the Society’s diverse audiences. Individual will ultimately be responsible for assuring consistency and coherency of messages presented through various professional communications. Incumbent serves as a resource and consultant with respect to Society publications and editing issues. Because of the nature of the position, an irregular work schedule is not unusual.
