Aquarium Medical Center Supervisor

Under the supervision of the Director of Animal Health, manages Aquarium Medical Center personnel, business, and physical plant, including biologists, veterinary technicians, interns, volunteers, equipment, inventory, maintenance contracts, licenses, and permits. Participates in clinical care and research throughout the Aquarium.

SCHEDULE
This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be Tuesday-Saturday. Availability to work weekends, some holidays, and occasional early morning or late-night hours is required.

ESSENTIAL LEADERSHIP FUNCTIONS
1. Manages and supervises Animal Health Department biologists and veterinary technicians, including goal setting, annual performance appraisals, on-going performance feedback, scheduling, and professional development.
2. Manages staff schedules, approves time off requests and provides adequate personnel coverage at all times. Reviews and approves bi-weekly timecards in accordance with Finance Department deadlines.
3. Assists the Director of Animal Health in conducting interviews and making recommendations for hiring new staff.
4. Serves as the Animal Health Department liaison to the Volunteer and Intern Program, and coordinates, supervises and teaches volunteers and interns.
5. In collaboration with the Director of Animal Health, oversees aspects of the Animal Health Department budget and planning, including financial needs for equipment, contracts, permits, licenses, supplies, and diagnostic services.
6. Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory policies and guidelines, including radiation safety, controlled drugs, equipment calibration, permits, licenses, AZA, AAZV, AVMA, FDA, USDA, and OSHA policies.
7. Regularly re-evaluates standard operating procedures, incorporating the newest methods and innovations to maintain high medical standards.
8. Maintains supply cache and manages ordering for Aquarium Medical Center.
9. Lead by example, collaborating and fostering a team environment amongst Animal Care Division staff and across other divisions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Assumes all Essential Functions of Animal Health Department Senior Biologist. Performs all senior biologist duties as needed, including assisting veterinarians with medical cases, examinations, restraint, diagnostics, treatments, and necropsies.
2. Maintains and operates medical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, and environmental life support, (e.g. blood analyzers, water chemistry analyzers, radiography units, microscopes, wet/dry procedure
table, filters, etc.); maintains and catalogues documentation of the proper use and maintenance of this equipment.
3. Maintains accurate and complete medical records, images, slides, databases, and information archives.
4. Researches biological and medical information on cases and/or diseases. Corresponds with other NEAq departments or outside institutions when needed to gather or relay information concerning medical cases.
5. Performs weekly rounds with husbandry staff.
6. Can coordinate and implement an appropriate response to veterinary emergencies in the absence of a veterinarian.
7. Demonstrates broad understanding of the field of aquatic animal health, including common diseases and treatments, general husbandry, environmental quality, zoonotic diseases, and conservation issues.
8. Understands the physiologic effects of various anesthetics, and can safely induce, maintain, monitor, and recover a variety of species from general anesthesia in collaboration with a veterinarian.
9. Participates in clinical research including conceptualization, design, execution, data acquisition, data analysis, presentation, publication, marketing and communication, and outreach.

Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Training and Experience • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or veterinary technology • Five years of experience in aquatic animal husbandry or veterinary medicine required. • Two years of demonstrated supervisory/leadership experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Critical thinking, data analysis, research skills, and writing skills. • Thorough understanding of animal health and welfare standards. • Excellent math skills and computer skills. Experience with medical diagnostic equipment. • Must have strong training, mentoring and team-building skills. • Must have strong communications and collaboration skills and a commitment to Animal Care Division priorities. • Strong leadership skills in routine and emergency situations.
