Curator of Fishes and Invertebrates


Oversees the administration and management of the Fish and Invertebrate Department, including collection and facilities planning, development of exhibits, educational programming, as well as research and conservation activities. Interacts with counterparts in other institutions regarding acquisitions and dispositions, breeding, and Species Survival Plan activities. Oversees daily husbandry and collection management, life support, and the department’s volunteer and internship program. Responsible for the day-to-day management and career progression of the aquarist staff and provides oversight of all routine duties.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of department exhibits
  • Provides counsel and training that enable staff to grow professionally; recruits, evaluates and disciplines as necessary
  • Plans, oversees and participates in the acquisition and disposition of fishes, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians
  • Participates in concept development, planning, design, and implementation of new exhibits as well as changes in existing exhibits
  • Plans and administers approved department budgets; identifies and implements capital projects within the department
  • Supervises project and exhibit implementation through communicating with staff from all departments
  • Completes all animal care, exhibit maintenance and improvements without disruption or minimal impact to visitors or the visitor experience
  • Research and development of animals, exhibits and life support for improving the Aquarium’s exhibits
  • Works closely with life support staff to troubleshoot water system problems, recommends and jointly develops solutions, and implements them
  • Identifies animal health problems and works with Animal Health staff to assist in the correct diagnosis and development and implementation of an effective treatment plan.
  • Works with Animal Health staff to develop, implement, and maintain a preventive disease program
  • Ensures that exhibit areas and collection animals are maintained at AZA standards

Experience Required

Requested Requirements • At least five years of experience with aquatic husbandry in the zoological field • Three years of experience in a supervisory position at a zoological institution; equivalent experience in a related scientific field will be considered • Bachelor's degree in biological or aquatic sciences; significant experience in aquarium husbandry may be considered in lieu of a degree • SCUBA certification required with extensive diving experience • Must have sound professional knowledge of aquatic, biology, and basic chemistry concepts as well as common fish diseases, water quality, medical treatments related to Aquatic animal health
