Communications Manager

The Communications Manager functions as a brand builder for the East Coast Zoological Society. This full-time position is responsible for assisting the Marketing and Communication Director with implementing annual marketing, media relations and general communication strategies including planning all schedules and creating all internal, external and online content which involves taking photos, shooting and editing videos and basic graphic design. This person will manage a Content Specialist, and at times, college interns and marketing volunteers.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist Marketing and Communication Director in development and implementation of annual marketing, media relations and communication strategies.
  • Manage content for a variety of audiences on a variety of communication platforms such as newsletters, e-newsletters/e-mails, news releases, presentations, brand collateral materials, websites and social media. 
  • Capture and edit photos and video to use with created content.
  • Develop realistic strategies, objectives, targets and measures for all social media platforms utilized by the Zoo.
  • Manage the online communication plan including updating/adding content for all of the organization’s websites and social media platforms to include, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Serve as a communication liaison for media relations, create and manage the dissemination of Zoo information to all media through news releases and ready to runs, etc., as well as schedule and logistically set up media opportunities at the Zoo with proper staff. 
  • Assist in the review of and/or production of collateral materials in support of the organization’s departments and general marketing efforts.
  • Responsible for assisting the event department with all public events held at the Zoo, whether working a position at these events, communicating before and after the event with vendors, and other duties. 
  • Serve on internal committees.
  • Responsible for ensuring accuracy in proofreading and that content is without errors. 
  • Represent the organization at outreach events and conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience Required

• Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or journalism and a minimum of four years’ experience working in marketing, public relations, advertising or other industry-related field. • Applicant must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. • Applicant must be able to write effective marketing copy for target audiences and for a broad spectrum of communication channels. • Applicants with skills in photography, videography and graphic design strongly preferred. • Possess strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills to develop relationships and create effective solutions to marketing and communication problems. • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud. • Talented and knowledgeable of best practices with social media platforms. • Flexible working schedule; will be required to work some evenings, weekends and holidays. • Detail-oriented and exceptional organization and time-management skills are a must. • Applicant must be capable of executing tasks independently, should be detail-oriented, physically able to lift and move event props, materials and equipment up to 30 pounds.
