Educator

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

The National Aviary’s Educator is part of a dynamic and energetic Education Department performing all job assignments with a positive attitude that reflects the National Aviary’s mission to inspire a respect for nature through an appreciation of birds. The Educator provides interpretive support and communications for the National Aviary’s exhibits, animals, and special events; provides high quality visitor engagement throughout the National Aviary’s exhibits and public spaces; and facilitates National Aviary education programs, tours, and activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitates interpretive education and models active visitor engagement throughout the National Aviary’s public spaces and within programs and special events as assigned.
  • Facilitates on-site education classes, events, and experiences for visitors, schools, scouts, organized youth organizations and adult groups.
  • Conducts guided tours as scheduled.
  • Model interpretive education techniques for incoming volunteers.
  • Maintains awareness and understanding of the National Aviary’s animal collection and environment, and appreciates and each animal’s natural history and personal story.
  • Operates Birdly®, the National Aviary’s virtual reality bird flight experience as needed.
  • Monitors and reports on the cleanliness and functionality of the National Aviary’s public spaces, with attention to guest perception of all National Aviary public-facing spaces and programming.
  • Adheres to all established protocols and procedures.
  • Interacts with visitors utilizing Aviary Visitor Engagement protocol.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Interpretive Educator has no supervisory responsibilities.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong interpretation and presentation skills, as well as the ability to continually interact and communicate enthusiastically with a variety of audiences in a professional and productive manner
  • Ability to engage others, using initiative and proper professional judgment
  • Demonstrated understanding of environmental education and conservation education methods and content
  • Must be able to clearly convey information and respond to questions in a professional manner
  • Ability to interact with visitors and colleagues in a highly professional, respectful, and responsive manner

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate degree in Environmental Education, Education, Communications, Performing Arts, Zoological Sciences or related field or 2-4 years related experience
  • Previous experience in an education department in a zoo, nature center, museum, or other informal learning center a plus

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Satisfactory Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse History Certification
  • Satisfactory FBI Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to pass Department of Motor Vehicles check required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly moves about the office and exhibits. The employee is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time in immersive habitats year round and to assist guests getting on and off of Birdly® as needed. The employee must be able to operate mechanical and technical equipment as trained.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environments will include climate-controlled office spaces, public areas where the noise level may be loud, and outdoors where work may need to be performed in inclement weather conditions, including extremes of temperature and precipitation.

POSITION TYPE/ EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK.

This is a part-time position.  The employee must be able to work weekdays, weekends and holidays as scheduled. Occasional evenings and offsite work may be required.
