Lead Construction & Maintenance Worker - Electrician - San Diego Zoo Safari Park

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Lead Construction & Maintenance Worker – Electrician will support San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission of saving species worldwide by performing a variety of skilled and skilled work in the maintenance, construction, alteration, remodeling and repair of organization buildings, facilities, equipment and grounds; and performs related work as required. This position reports to Facilities Department, C&M Manager.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Installs, trouble-shoots, and makes repairs to motors, lighting circuits, electrical control equipment, transformers, conduit and duct systems, electrical appliances, and other types of electrical lighting and power equipment;
  • Checks circuits and performs electrical repair of Zoo’s Electrical infrastructure and electrical gear;
  • Interprets electrical plans, diagrams, and specifications;
  • Keeps records and prepares reports of work done and materials used;
  • Coordinate with the C&M projects manager on electrical capital improvement projects

WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES?

  • Responsible for communicating and enforcing safety standards, Zoo policies, and general workplace common sense to members of their team;
  • Coordinating and executing maintenance and repair activities;
  • Implementing and monitoring safety trainings and materials;
  • Communicating to animal care specialist about the timing and execution of maintenance and repair activities;
  • Acts as a liaison on behalf of the C&M and communicates information to the C&M manager
  • Responsible for delegating work to team members throughout the work day and is responsible for reporting back to the C&M manager on status of maintenance and repairs activities 
  • Responsible for executing work order requests and reporting the completion of work orders to the C&M manager 
  • Responsible for requesting materials for all maintenance and repair activities and working closely with C&M manager and C&M Office Manager to place orders for materials
  • Has the ability to diagnose field issues quickly and provide feedback to the C&M manager so issues can be resolved quickly 
  • Serve as a mentor for those on their teams with less experience and ultimately assist team members in developing their skills

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is looking for a Lead Construction and Maintenance Worker with an emphasis in electrical. Must have the experience to estimate materials and labor costs for projects; have the ability to navigate an electronic work order system and perform enter data into an asset management tracking system, and perform electronic timecard entry.  Candidate must have a proficiency using a Windows based computer and have the ability to create work summaries using MS Word and Excel. This position will be expected to work weekends and afternoon/evening shifts.

JOB EXPERIENCE

You must meet ONE of the following:

  • Successful completion of a state-accredited four or five-year Electrical Apprenticeship Program or;
  • Five years of full-time journey-level electrical experience in at least TWO of the following types of facilities: Entertainment park, commercial, industrial, residential or governmental agencies. Qualifying journey-level electrical experience in the following areas: Installing, replacing, maintaining and repairing electrical units.

or

  • 5 years’ experience working for a license electrical contractor;
  • An equivalent combination of journey-level experience and apprenticeship training from a State Accredited Electrical Apprenticeship Program.

EDUCATION AND CERFICATIONS

  • Education, training, and/or experience as a journey-level the essential functions, knowledge and skills outlined;
  • A current and valid California driver license in good standing is required

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Methods, practices and procedures in one or more of the building and construction trades;
  • Tools, equipment and materials used in one or more of the building and construction trades;
  • Work and material estimating;
  • Safely and properly handle and operate the tools and equipment used in the assigned building and construction trade(s);
  • Recognize and discriminate between colors and/or sounds;
  • Make simple arithmetic calculations;
  • Understand and carry out instructions;
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with others in a diverse environment;
  • Understand, interpret and work from blueprints/drawings;
  • Competently perform the duties of one or more of the building and construction trades outlined;
