Zoo Dietician

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision is responsible for the procurement and maintenance of animal food and supply inventories for the effective operations of the Zoo. Plans, directs and oversee the daily activities of Commissary Staff, including diet volunteers. Unloads supplies, cleans and sanitizes work areas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the preparation of diets in accordance with diet menu specifications including bird, reptiles, fish, invertebrate and small and large mammals diets.
  • Responsible for maintaining records of animals’ diets and performs basic bookkeeping functions including budgeting and cost analysis.
  • Responsible for the procurement, maintenance and control of animal food, supply and equipment inventories needed for the effective operations of the Zoo.
  • Assist with maintenance of diet, inventory, stocking and receiving records.
  • Supervises the work of Commissary staff, including diet volunteers, including instructing, assigning and reviewing work, planning, maintaining standards.
  • Responsible for maintaining clean and sanitary conditions of food preparation areas including counters, floors, cooler, freezer, and grain room in order to meet or exceed AZA and U.S.D.A. standards.
  • Operates various types of equipment in the performance of duties such as a dishwasher, blender, electronic scale, and stove.
  • Arranges for the proper and expeditious maintenance and repair of Commissary equipment.
  • Interacts and communicates with fellow employees, immediate supervisor, and truck delivery drivers.
  • Under direction from Staff Veterinarians, receives diet change forms and alters diets appropriately.
  • Assist Staff Veterinarian in diet studies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The ideal candidate would be personable, proactive, self-motivated, independent, a problem solver, and be able to work with intermittent guidance.
  • Must possess ability to learn quickly and carry out tasks as directed, following detailed directions.
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of mathematics sufficient for common kitchen calculations. 
  • Ability to stand for up to 8 hours.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds on a routine basis.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • One year of food service experience or 1 year of working in a zoo facility preferred but not required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • College coursework in biology, zoology, wildlife, nutrition, etc. preferred but not required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Vaccinations should be up to date. Proof of negative TB test (within the past 6 months) is required prior to start date.
