The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking an experienced keeper to join the Primate Unit, which is comprised of the Jungle of the Apes (gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees) and the Primate House/Primate Canopy Trails (lemurs, Old and New World monkeys). The successful candidate will be cross-trained in both areas to help with coverage as needed, primary placement will depend on the needs of the unit and the experience of the successful applicant. This position requires seasonal late night and event coverage duties.
Successful candidates will be adaptable and flexible, able to manage a wide array of duties and responsibilities, follow all protocols and foster a safe working environment, and possess strong communication and teamwork skills. Keepers will perform a wide variety of specialized work including daily animal care, exhibit/area cleaning, enrichment, behavioral training, animal observations, animal health care, documentation and record-keeping, minor exhibit maintenance, public presentations and tours, and other related duties as needed.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in an animal-related field preferred. Previous paid keeper experience is required; primate experience is a plus. Knowledge of animal behavior and good observation skills are important, and a strong interest in behavior management and animal welfare is critical. Candidates must have the physical ability to perform required duties as assigned, including standing for long periods of time, lifting, bending, climbing, and working in all types of weather.
