Lubee Bat Conservancy

Lubee Bat Conservancy is an international non-profit organization dedicated to saving bats and their habitats through research, conservation, and education, with a focus on children and community engagement.

Lubee Bat Conservancy Animal Care Internship for August through October 2021

Lubee Bat Conservancy is accepting applications for an unpaid internship working with a wide variety of fruit bats and other species. 

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not necessarily limited to, the maintenance and observation of the health, feeding, and care of a variety of species, record keeping, assisting in veterinary procedures, providing medications, designing and giving enrichment to the collection, the ability to observe and/or assist in vet procedures (rabies vaccination required for handling), assisting in research projects and general grounds maintenance.  Interns are required to complete a project which will be discussed and designed with Lubee staff.  Applicants must be self-motivated, outgoing, energetic, and possess the ability to work in a team setting.

The internship is a minimum 10 weeks but can be extended if desired. Work weeks are 5, 8 hour days. Lubee Bat Conservancy staff are present 365 days a year and interns may have to work holidays. Applicants must be 18 years old and able to pass a background check, lift 50lbs, provide a negative TB test, and Tetanus vaccinated. This is an unpaid internship and doesn’t offer housing. Interns must provide ID and have a reliable form of transportation. 

College credit: We will work with your college/university to offer college credit, however it is your responsibility to arrange this. We will provide any documentation or testing your school requires for credit hours.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is an unpaid internship opportunity wherein the intern will support the Animal Care Department.

Through this internship, interns will:

Learn alongside professional animal care staff basic animal husbandry including cleaning exhibits, preparing food and enrichment activities, and assisting with environmental enhancements.

Learn formal and informal interpretive educational programs for visitors.

Learn how to develop and implement animal enrichment programs.

Learn and follow animal/keeper safety guidelines, operations, and polices.

Learn USDA and AZA guidelines, procedures and protocols and other related literature.

Develop or select a project to complete during the internship.

At the end of the internship, present a short summary of your project to Lubee staff

This internship description is not intended to be all-inclusive; therefore, the intern may be required to perform other reasonably related duties as assigned by staff.

HOUSING:

The intern will make his or her own housing arrangements in the north central FL area.

Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working around animals in a zoo or similar setting preferred. Must have strong communication skills. Must be able to engage within a team environment with staff, other interns and volunteers. Must enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be in good physical condition – able to stand for long periods of time, stoop, climb, and lift at least 50 pounds. Must have a current negative TB test (within the last 2 years.) Must have current Tetanus vaccine (within the last 10 years). Strong preference will be given to those with a sincere desire in becoming an animal keeper.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT This is an internship starting the week of August 16th through the week of October 25th (with the option of extending for longer if desired). This internship includes Lubee’ Annual Bat Festival to be held on Saturday October 23rd which interns are required to work. Interns should be able to devote 40 hours a week (5 days a week 8:00AM-4:00PM). Applications are due by 11:59 PM on Sunday June 25th, 2021.

Salary

This is an unpaid internship. College credit is offered if desired.
