Greensboro Science Center

Part time Aquarist/Zookeeper

The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is hiring an entry-level aquarist position that will report directly to the Aquatics Curator. GSC is a 68,000 square-foot AZA and AAM accredited science museum as well as a 33,000 square-foot aquarium that also includes our current 12-acre zoo and the new 10-acre expansion.  The Wiseman Aquarium features: African black-footed penguins,  small-clawed Asian otters, a 90,000 gallon reef exhibit, a 7,000 gallon ray touch tank and a multi-taxon Amazon exhibit housing small primates, reptiles and Amazonian fish. In addition, we display a number of other animals including a giant Pacific octopus, jellies, corals, seahorses, indo-pacific fishes and more.

Job Responsibilities:

-Help care for a diverse collection of fishes, reptiles, mammals and birds including multiple species of sharks and rays, as well as Amazonian and Caribbean fish, penguins, anaconda, small primates and small-clawed Asian otters.

-Assist with life support system maintenance. 

-Water quality testing.

-Diet preparation.

-Perform recordkeeping.

-Perform exhibit cleaning.

-Responsible for salt water production.

-Operant conditioning and enrichment.

-Dive as necessary and potentially perform dive shows.

-In addition, all aquarists are expected to assist others in shared responsibilities pertaining to common use areas.

Qualifications:

-Basic working knowledge of AZA standards

-Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships  

-Ability to enter animal areas and perform physical work (including lifting objects up to 60 lbs.) with extending standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, carrying, etc.  Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work

-Must show a strong attention to detail

-Must be well organized, have keen observation skills, and good human relation skills

-A working knowledge of training concepts and application is also desired

Candidates should expect to work between 25-29 hours a week, which may include weekends, holidays and rotating shifts. This position is non-exempt and may be required to work inclement weather events regardless of aquarium/zoos operational status

 

 

 

Experience Required

We are seeking a candidate with either terrestrial or aquatic experience as this position will be heavily involved in both aspects. Candidates should expect to work between 25-29 hours a week, which may include weekends, holidays and rotating shifts. This position is non-exempt and may be required to work inclement weather events regardless of aquarium/zoos operational status Education: -Associate’s Degree from an accredited college specializing in Zoo and Aquaria programming or completed within 60 days of hire. Or: -Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university in Biology, Zoology, or related field or completed within 60 days of hire. Or: -Equivalent years of work experience.

Licenses and Certifications: S.C.U.B.A. certification required or acquire within 2 months of hire Ability to pass Dive Program swim test and physical required. Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.

Salary

$10.25/hr
