Catering Lead - San Diego Zoo

The Catering Lead performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Catering Lead under direction supervises schedules and performs a variety of duties related to inside and outside catered events. This position reports to the Chef, and Banquet Manager.



  • Supervises and schedules the duties of catering employees
  • Oversees each event in a timely and profitable manner
  • Trains new catering employees
  • Processes event sheets in a correct and timely manner
  • Adheres to event contracts and planner
  • Adapts to last minute schedule or contract changes
  • Orders items and supplies for events
  • Makes certain the work area is maintained in a safe and sanitary condition
  • Operates and understand the Micros cash register system
  • Provides feedback to supervisor on each event
  • Gives evaluative feedback on catering employees
  • Serves orders for food and beverages
  • Escorts’ guests to and from scheduled activity locations 
  • Makes Customer Service a top priority 
  •  Advises customers’ regarding menu items 
  • Answers customers’ questions regarding the Zoo or Safari Park 
  • Greets customers 
  • Engages in the SDZWA’s mission and vision 
  • Adheres to all SDZWA and department policies and practices 
  • Model for punctuality and professionalism 
  • Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics 
  • Performs consistently above Society performance standards 
  • Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards


This position requires excellent customer service skills. Catering/Banquet experience is required and some bar tending experience. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants must be available to work any five days of the week including evenings and holidays. A good driving record and a valid California driver license is highly desirable. 


Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials and equipment used in food service
  • Safety rules and regulations
  • All menu items including ingredients and cooking methods
  • Inventory controls, procedures and best practices
  • Basic computer usage
  • Effective leadership practices
  • Cash register and handles customer complaints 
  • Keeping accurate and detailed records

  • Multi-task and prioritize to meet the demands of business
  • Work competently with large groups in a diverse environment
  • Proficiently handle cash and credit card transactions
  • Understand and carry out instructions
  • Communicate clearly and positively concerning all facets of a function

Duration: Year round

Union Position: Starting hourly wage $19.93
