Mechanic Assistant - Full time Seasonal - San Diego Zoo

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Mechanic Assistant performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Mechanic Assistant under general supervision maintains and services a wide variety of vehicles and motorized equipment; makes minor repairs to vehicles and equipment.  This position will report to the Lead and Fleet Manager.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Inspect automobile, trucks, buses and other vehicles
  • Check water, batteries, transmissions, brakes and differentials on vehicles
  • Check tire pressure
  • Change tires and wheel
  • Maintain oil and fuel records, service records, and similar data
  • Check and record mileage
  • Wash and wax SDZWA vehicles
  • Transport vehicles to garage for servicing and repair
  • Drive motorize vehicles on and off grounds
  • Assist mechanics 
  • Make minor repairs and adjustments to vehicles
  • Inspect automobile, trucks, buses and other vehicles for gas, oil and lubrication, and perform related servicing
  • Maintain service areas in a clean, safe and orderly condition
  • Maintain and services garage equipment tools
  • Adhere to all SDZWA and department policies and practices

 

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking an individual that has experience in performing skilled mechanical and electrical repair and routine maintenance on diesel, gasoline and electric powered vehicles. At least 1 year of Journey level experience in automotive and electrical repair is required. Knowledge of air and hydraulic systems, as well as the most recent diagnostic equipment is helpful. Fuel injection system experience is highly desirable. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. A valid California driver license is required. Applicants must be available to work any of the seven days of the week, approximately 40 hours per week. This is a seasonal full-time opportunity from June 8th through September 10th.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current valid California driver license in good standing

 

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE 

  • General servicing requirements for vehicles and motorized equipment
  • Basic mechanical principles and mechanic’s tools and equipment
  • Make arithmetic calculations
  • Keep simple records
  • Understand and carry out instructions
  • Learn specific mechanical maintenance tasks
  • Work effectively with others in a diverse environment

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position has been identified as one requiring at least occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds; move moderate to heavy objects and work from elevated positions and on slippery surfaces; standing, bending, squatting, twisting, and reaching; operate assigned tools and equipment.

IMPORTANT DETAILS

  • Location: San Diego Zoo
  • Duration: Seasonal full-time opportunity from June 8th to September 10th – Depending on work performance and staffing needs you may be invited to stay on as a Part Time team member at the end of the season.
  • Positions available: 3
  • Union Position: Starting hourly wage $22.28
  • If selected, there are union fees and dues to be paid to the Union
