Interactive Animal Guide

Job Title: Interactive Animal Guide

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Hours: Part-time

 

Summary:

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is seeking Interactive Animal Guides to assist with the guest experience at interactive animal areas. This position is responsible for facilitating educational experiences and monitoring safe interactive encounters at the Stingray Beach, Aquarium Touch Pool, Lemur Walkway, African Goat Kraal, Children Adventure Trails Goat Hills, & Giraffe Feeding Encounter. Ideal candidates must have excellent people skills, attention to detail and flexibility. This position reports directly to the Wild Kingdom Pavilion Supervisor under the direction of the Interactive Animal Programs Manager.

 

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Ensure all guests follow regulations for proper exhibit experience and safe animal interaction.
  • Share educational information about animals & exhibits while supporting the mission of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium.
  • Provide basic animal care under the direction of animal care staff, including some enclosure cleaning and food preparation.
  • Assist all Zoo guests with questions or guidance to enhance their visit.

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience working with animals preferred.
  • Experience in customer service and/or educational interpretation preferred.
  • Must have strong guest service skills.
  • Must be comfortable with one-on-one guest engagement.
  • Must be comfortable working with a diverse population of all ages and abilities.
  • Have the ability to maintain a positive attitude while balancing multiple priorities.
  • Able to present relevant and factual information about a diverse group of animals.
  • Able to exhibit good judgment in making decisions.
  • Able to function independently or with the supervisor to manage guest questions.

 

All candidates are required to pass a pre-employment background check, including a drug test, and must possess a valid driver’s license.  A negative TB test is also required.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Position requires standing for long periods, walking, and the ability to use hands to signal and feel.
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch and/or crawl; talk and hear; occasionally sit; frequently lift a minimum of 20-25 lbs.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work is performed mostly outdoors; under all weather conditions.
