Exhibits Specialist

RWPZ is currently recruiting for a full-time, year-round, Exhibits Specialist. The Exhibits Specialist will participate in the planning and design process for new exhibits, as well as act as the lead for inhouse exhibit construction and interactive displays. The individual in this position is also responsible for coordinating with various departments on thematic and interpretive aspects of exhibits. 


  • Construct and aid in the recreation of natural animal habitats utilizing materials that consider the animals well-being, including:
    1. sculpting artificial habitat elements,
    2. basic plumbing and operation of pump and filtration equipment,
    3. mold making and casting,
    4. concrete repair with color matching, as needed,
    5. artistic wood structures, i.e. props, floats, etc.
  • Facilitate and assist in the maintenance of RWPZ exhibits to ensure optimal condition.
  • In-house fabrication, sometimes with assistance of other Operations staff and subcontractors, to complete assigned projects.
  • Participate in the coordination and assistance of propping exhibits.
  • Research new materials / techniques for exhibit building.
  • Work safely by ensuring proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies and by maintaining clean and tidy work areas and work sites.
  • Remain current in industry developments. Make professional contacts and attend professional conferences, as applicable.
  • Orders exhibit supplies and maintain inventories.
  • Assist Operations department in snow removal, event overflow, vacation staffing.
  • Participate in the coordination of horticulture work and landscaping in animal exhibits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager and/or Director of Operations.

Experience Required

Associates Degree in design related field, plus three to five years’ experience in practical application of required skills, such as cabinet grade and finish carpentry construction and shift door mechanics, at a zoo or comparable setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience with site layout and infrastructure skills is also required. License in Heavy Machine Operation and experience with light steel fabrication and welding are preferred. Skills and Aptitudes: • Steel fabrication. • Ability to: o read/comprehend blueprints, shop drawings, o communicate effectively with staff, vendors, etc., o provide clear and concise information, o read, interpret and process information from blueprints and plans, o utilize standard hand tools and operate air power tools and other construction equipment to either construct or demolish exhibits. • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, MS Project and C.A.D. • Cooperative attitude and team player. • Highly organized and able to work independently. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Requirements: • Successful completion of a background check. • Valid state driver’s license. • Willingness to: i. be on call and work flexible work schedule, including occasional weekends, evenings and holidays, ii. shovel, dig, rake, and haul substrates such as gravel, loam, fill, etc. • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions and • Occasionally required to climb ladders and to lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
