Safety and Training Coordinator

The Little Rock Zoo is seeking a qualified Safety & Training Coordinator specializing in developing and implementing a safety management program for the Zoo to ensure operations are in compliance with the safety standards and policies of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and all applicable federal, state and local guidelines.  This individual will provide training and training opportunities to Zoo staff for safety, safe practices and emergency response.  This is a Senior Leadership position for the Zoo

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops, implements and maintains a safety management program for the Little Rock Zoo to ensure operations are in compliance with the safety standards and policies of established organizations
  • Maintains the Emergency Response Plan in compliance with AZA accreditation using best practices of the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and the City of Little Rock’s overall emergency response plan.  Provides training to Zoo staff on procedures
  • Investigates departmental risk management-related complaints and administrative issues from guests and employees.  Reports findings and recommends solutions.
  • Conducts on-site inspections of Zoo property and facilities to ensure safety of guests, staff and contractors.
  • Oversees training of the Zoo’s Emergency Response Team, both firearms and chemical capture.  Coordinates firearm safety training and range practices.
  • Plans and coordinates various safety drills to include Code RED, Weather, Dive, Fire, Active Shooter, etc.  Develops and maintains a relationship with the City of Little Rock Police and Fire Departments as well as local hospitals.
  • Oversees general safety and security on grounds and in parking areas of the Zoo.  Coordinates Zoo Safety Ranger program to ensure monitoring on-grounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of safety related methods, practices, policies, procedures and techniques
  • Knowledge of federal and state safety regulations
  • Knowledge of AZA Accreditation standards and OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of training methods and techniques
  • Skill in maintaining records, and developing databases
  • Ability to develop, implement and maintain a safety program
  • Ability to train employees regarding safety techniques and methods

Experience Required

Two (2) years of experience in risk management, employee safety program activities to include one (1) year of experience developing and administering a safety program.
