Mammal Keeper

The growing and conservation focused Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is seeking a Mammal Keeper with responsibilities focused on care and wellness of assigned animals and maintenance of assigned areas.  

Competencies include:

  • Animal husbandry, daily care, and welfare assessments.
  • Implementation of cooperative breeding programs.    
  • Operant conditioning and behavioral research.
  • Environmental enrichment.
  • Exhibit maintenance/minor repair.

Candidates must possess solid observational and record keeping skills, an excellent safety record, a strong work history, good time management and task prioritization skills, and the ability to interact and communicate well with guests and co-workers.


  • College degree in biology or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in AZA accredited institution preferred.
  • Experience working with great apes, particularly gorillas and/or bonobos, is highly preferred. Will also be working with African monkeys, lemurs, and species native to Florida including the Manatee Critical Care Center. 
  • Ability to effectively balance both independent work and teamwork.

 Physical Requirements:

Must be able to remain on feet for long periods of time. Must be able to crawl, climb, jump, rake, stoop, sweep, bend, lift, reach and lift overhead, kneel, and carry objects for short distances.Must be able to lift 50 lbs. without difficulty. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions including rain, heat, and cold.Must be able to traverse Zoo grounds on foot. Must be able to operate motorized carts. Must possess visual acuity appropriate for animal care and general safety practices.
