Mammal Department Supervisor

The Mammal Department Supervisor assists with ensuring the care and welfare of animals in the Mammal Department.  The Supervisor is responsible for the animal care staff, oversees daily animal care and welfare, coordinates repair and maintenance of mammal facilities, and demonstrates leadership in implementing the mission of the Detroit Zoological Society.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise animal care staff and assign tasks.
  • Provide leadership and participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of enrichment and training activities.
  • Ensure animal care staff are sufficiently trained in all required areas.
  • Assist with the preparation of staff work schedules.
  • Responsible for animal care staff performance and development.
  • Ensure staff compliance with policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Coordinate animal health and medical procedures with veterinary staff and provide medical treatments as needed.
  • Assist with the preparation and submission of animal welfare evaluations and research.
  • Conduct inspections of mammal facilities and public areas as needed.
  • Ensure that equipment and facilities meet the required standards.
  • Lead or participate in safety drills and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Conduct educational presentations in both formal and informal settings.
  • Maintain records, inventories and other information and provide written and verbal reports as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to all seasonal  weather conditions, with frequent exposure to and contact with dangerous animals, with risk of zoonotic disease transmission (Hepatitis B, Herpes B, Tuberculosis, Salmonella and others), and with exposure to computer monitors.  Weekend and evening work will be required as necessary.
Physical Requirements
The ability to perform principal duties is required. The Mammal Department Supervisor must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.  The Detroit Zoological Society will make reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. 

Experience Required

Qualifications Education and Experience • Bachelor’s degree in zoology or a closely related discipline. • Four (4) years’ experience in the care of captive wildlife, three (3) of which include the care and management of mammals. • Experience with specific taxa may be required for some supervisory positions. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Must have the ability to analyze and problem solve. • Must have leadership and team building abilities. • Detail oriented, organized and good time management skills. • The ability to interact with a diverse team and audience. • The ability to provide consistent feedback and direction to staff. Preferred • Two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.
