Pueblo Zoo

Pueblo Zoo Intern

The goal of Pueblo Zoo’s internship program is to allow current students and graduates aspiring to be in the animal care field to gain hands-on experience under the mentorship of experienced professionals. 

Internships are available three times a year per the following schedule:

  • Summer (May- Aug), deadline to apply is March 1.
  • Fall (Aug-Dec), deadline to apply is June 1.
  • Spring (Jan-May), deadline to apply is Nov 1.

Applicants that can commit to the following will be given preference:

  • Minimum of 12 weeks
  • Minimum of 4 days and 32 hours/ week

Credit hours may be earned depending on your school's policy. 

Available Internships:

  • Penguin/ Small Carnivore Intern- includes penguins, otters, small mammals, and raptors. 

  • Hoofstock Intern - includes a variety of large and small hoofstock species, Maned Wolves, Cinereous Vultures, and education animals.

  • Primate/Carnivore Intern- includes Painted Dogs, gibbons, De Brazza’s, and a variety of other mammals, birds and reptiles. 

  • Aviary/ Herps Intern- includes diet kitchen, lions, and a variety of birds and herps. 

  • Rover- works in any of the above sections on any given day. 


These internships will have you working alongside our keeper staff and will include experiencing, assisting, and potentially working individually on the following: 

  • Routine cleaning of animal exhibits/holding/service areas to USDA/AZA standards

  • Preparing and distributing animal diets

  • Observing and reporting animal behavior and medical concerns

  • Administering veterinary treatments under direction of Area Supervisor or Vet

  • Observing and reporting maintenance needs of equipment, buildings and grounds

  • Assisting in setting up animal exhibits

  • Routine handling of animals

  • Answering questions from the public in a friendly, educational manner

  • Completing ethograms and welfare evaluations

  • Writing accurate and detailed animal records

  • Observing and/or assisting in veterinary procedures

  • Training and goal-based enrichment plans

  • Completing 12 weekly online seminars to enhance your knowledge and experience at Pueblo Zoo. 

  • Completing 12 weeks of on site classes to enhance your understanding and knowledge of animal training programs.


Pueblo Zoo’s internships are unpaid and housing is not provided. 

Must be able to pass a TB test, drug test, and background check.
