Staten Island Zoo (SIZ) is an AZA-accredited facility with a unique collection of ~1100 specimens spanning 280 species. The Zoo has an immediate opening for a full-time commissary keeper to join the animal care team. We are looking for a motivated self-starter who is organized, detail-oriented, and does not cut corners. A willingness to learn and adhere to SIZ- and industry-wide food safety protocols is mandatory.
The commissary keeper will have primary work assignment in the kitchen overseeing diet preparation, inventory, and sanitation. Opportunities to train in animal care sections, such as Children’s Zoo or Africa wing, will be available for the right candidate. The keeper will also be empowered to participate in various zoo community initiatives such as enrichment and welfare committees, Equity and Inclusion Committee, or the Green Team.
Daily responsibilities will include:
Diet preparation for all animals at the zoo, including use of knives, stovetop, blender and food processor
Develop food enrichment for all areas
Monitor inventory and place orders with multiple vendors on a set schedule
Follow USDA, AZA, and SIZ guidelines for food safety and quality control
Cleaning and sanitation of the kitchen
Supervise and support interns and volunteers working in the commissary
Additional beneficial skills include: second language skills; experience with ZIMS software; experience with Microsoft Excel and Access; CPR/First Aid certification.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent; some college-level coursework in related field (biology, nutrition, animal science, zoo science)
EXPERIENCE: 6 months experience at a zoological institution preferred, in a food prep, administrative or animal care role.
AGE: 22 years
HEALTH: Negative tuberculosis test and negative COVID PCR test prior to first day. Must be in good physical health and have the ability to lift at least 50 lbs. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all climates.
AVAILABILITY: 5 days/week; must be available to work weekends and holidays.
