This is a senior position at the zoo that is responsible for oversight, management, and planning for construction, repair and cleanliness of zoo facilities and grounds, guest services and safety, and contracted service providers.


  • Participate as a member of the zoo’s leadership team, collaborating across departments to ensure collaboration and all zoo needs are met, embracing the zoo’s tagline of “For Wildlife. For All.”;  
  • Embrace values of and proactively advances values of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Participate in and regularly report to appropriate Board Committees;
  • Develop and oversee operations and buildings and grounds maintenance management program that is efficient, economical, and high impact, with a focus on public facing areas;
  • As needed, liaison with Chicago Park District on maintenance, operation, and modification of existing infrastructure;
  • Create the zoo campus Master Plan, including management of annual and multi-year workplans according to the goals outlined;  
  • Create and manage capital projects for the zoo, including liaising with architects, construction contractors, cost assessment and forecasting, focusing on sustainable efforts;
  • Develop, implement, and oversee a safe and secure environment for employees and guests, and oversees a proactive emergency response plan;
  • Manage general guest facing initiatives at the zoo, including security, safety, rides, and general guest services;
  • Liaison with the Chicago Police Department as needed to implement security measures for the zoo;
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate between zoo staff and service providers, including security, food and beverages, and retail;
  • Create and manage an asset management plan to ensure proper maintenance and operation of facility mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other building and infrastructure systems;
  • Work to further the green initiatives of the zoo to make operations more sustainable;
  • Prepare and manage annual departmental budgets and operational plans


  • May be called on to respond quickly to off-hours emergencies
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Considerable tact and human relations skills in interacting with all levels of management and non-management employees 
  • Good problem-solving and negotiating skills
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical, plumbing and mechanical maintenance
  • Knowledge of water quality principles and practices applicable to both mechanical systems and life support systems
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to communicate and be understood in business English
  • Knowledge of PCs, using word processing, spreadsheet and database software, esp. Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive reports, including schedules and budgets
  • Ability to organize tasks and time to ensure timely completion of all projects
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Ability to operate independently as an experienced professional
  • Ability to represent the zoo in a professional manner at all times
  • Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with all staff and guests


  Bachelor’s degree required. 


At least five years’ experience in facilities management, preferably in a service-oriented facility.  



Special event staffing as assigned

Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license with good driving record
