The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is a public-private partnership between the City of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit. The city owns and maintains the Aquarium’s buildings and provides administrative support while the foundation procures and maintains the collection of animals and exhibits. The foundation is also responsible for fundraising efforts and various scientific research, education, and conservation programs.
The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center's Digital Marketing Manager is responsible for website management, email communication, social marketing, and digital analytics and tracking. This position reports to the Vice President of Marketing and will plan, develop, and implement our digital marketing strategy.
Manage website performance, analytics, Search Engine Optimization strategy, and ongoing updates.
Develop and implement a content marketing strategy that utilizes digital marketing initiatives including but not limited to blogs, website, social media, email, and new digital technologies to drive ticket sales, promote traffic to the department’s websites, and to enhance brand awareness.
Manage the Marketing Content Specialist and assist in the creation of email campaigns, blog posts, and additional content creation.
Coordinate blog planning, scheduling, and management with content specialist and PR Manager.
Create, plan and develop email marketing campaigns and list management for newsletters, program announcements, special events, registration reminders, and member communication.
Create, plan and share content for VAQ’s social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and monitor pages for comments, feedback, etc.
Work with the creative team to implement new and existing content for website, email and social.
Keep up to date on latest UI/UX best practices, social media trends and web accessibility standards.
Determine strategy and effectiveness of digital, email and social campaigns through key metrics.
Work with internal clients to understand their goals/needs and develop initiatives to fulfill those goals and needs.
Develop and execute strategy for paid social campaigns and measure campaign results.
Generate monthly reports on year over year performance metrics for website and digital marketing initiatives
Analyze key metrics that maximize website traffic and behavior.
Communicate with Marketing Vice President about marketing goals and results.
Other duties as assigned, due to marketing team needs and strategy shifts.
This position is classified as a Media and Communications Coordinator I
MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields such as public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.
The ideal candidate will have the following preferences.
Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or related field.
2+ years of experience in digital marketing, with a focus on website management and email development.
Experience working with Google Analytics and SEO best practices.
Experience managing a company’s social media presence on Facebook and Instagram.
