Assistant Director

Job Description:

The Virginia Safari Park, one of three parks within the overall ZooFari Parks LLC system, has an opening for an Assistant Director. This presents a great opportunity to enter our system and learn our practices while assisting with the overall management of section managers.

We are a 180-acre drive-through zoo (within our 500-acre property) that offers a wide variety of animals, with a main focus on the Safari. The safari includes hundreds of animals including our giraffe, white rhinos, multiple antelope and cervid species, etc. The park also features our Safari Village, a walk-through section with large cats, primates, birds and reptiles. We are a breeding facility, and take pride and care in producing only the highest quality of specimens, including such species as white rhinos, giraffe, cheetahs, a wide variety of antelope species, Rueppells vultures and African penguins.

Routine Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The position requires overall day-to-day management of all departments and managers, while serving in a supportive role for the Director.

  • Experience in Facilities/Construction is an asset as oversight of this department and the day-to-day and long-term goals of projects are developed and met.

  • The Assistant Director also serves as the Manager-In-Charge during the Director’s absence. Departments include Facilities, Guest Services and Animal Care. Staffing typically averages 25-50+ employees total, depending upon the season.

  • Required to learn, understand and manage all sections of the zoo while upholding high standards and remain compliant with all regulatory agencies, spanning all departments.

  • Training within our system and spanning all departments will be provided and expected.

  • This position reports to the Director.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in animal care, facility management or administration in a zoological setting. A strong knowledge of Facilities is a definite asset.

  • A consistent history of professional growth, along with management experience.

  • Strong attention to detail and be an effective communicator

  • A proven record of managing staff in a zoological setting

  • A minimum of 5 years of total management experience required.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • A BS or higher degree in one of the animal sciences preferred, although a management or business degree is acceptable.

  • The ability to work flexible hours including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings as required to effectively delegate and manage the Zoo's departments.

  • Strong leadership skills and be adept at decision-making.

  • Be physically fit enough to be an effective and active member of the facility.

  • The Virginia Safari Park is a non-smoking facility and maintains strict personal appearance standards.
