JOB OPENING - RECREATION DIVISION

TITLE: ZOO EDUCATOR – PEORIA ZOO

POSITION: FULL TIME 

SALARY RANGE: $32,000 - $38,000 ANNUALLY BASED ON QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE.

OVERVIEW: Under minimal supervision of the Director of the Zoo, the Zoo Educator is responsible for a number of specific tasks as outlined below under responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development and delivery of educational programs.
  • Oversight and support of relevant part time education staff as needed.
  • Developing procedures and preparing reports for the education department.
  • Participating in programs and promotions for the Peoria Zoo, to include birthday parties.
  • Supporting the development and distribution of materials such as brochures geared toward educational activities as well as general Zoo information; development of displays used in educational exhibits.
  • Maintaining and organizing Zoo library, including all printed materials, slides and photographs.
  • Maintaining an accurate file of copies of all program materials as well as audio-visual equipment.
  • Serving as a Peoria Park District and Peoria Zoo liaison with area school districts, user groups and community residents.
  • Training and preparation of animal specimens and materials used in educational programs.
  • Preparing and coordinating exhibit signage and interpretive graphics used in and for the Zoo.  Assisting in the design of new exhibits to include interactive areas when possible.
  • Training, supervising and evaluating volunteers.
  • Maintaining excellent working relationships with Peoria Zoo staff, Park District staff and the general public.
  • Wearing proper, designated uniform during regular Zoo hours.
  • Knowing and following all safety procedures related to the duties performed.  Supporting all aspects of the Park District’s safety program.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

  • Four year college degree in Zoology, Education or a closely related field preferred.  Although a degree is preferred, experience in a like position with similar duties and responsibilities may be substituted for all or part of the educational preference.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in planning, developing and implementing educational programs is preferred.
  • Knowledge of natural history, animal behavior and care and exhibition of exotic and domestic animals; effective development and delivery of programs.
  • Understanding of basic philosophy underlying a sound community recreation program and ability to interpret that philosophy to staff and the public.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with representatives of community, public and private groups and organizations to provide the best possible image of the Park District so that the public respects and appreciates the Park District, its facilities and the quality of its recreation programs.
  • Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, innovative, safe and equitable to both internal and external customers.
  • Knowledge of facility operations, including scheduling, programming and basic supervisory practices.
  • Understanding of Park District finance and maintenance with the ability to apply and interpret knowledge in practical situations related to facility operations and programs.
  • Ability to train, supervise and evaluate employees.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both speaking and writing.
  • Requires a valid Class “D” Driver’s License.

Experience Required
