Assistant Curator of Primates

The Little Rock Zoo and the City of Little Rock is seeking a qualified Assistant Curator specializing in primates including great apes, monkeys and lemurs.  This is a new position that will supervise the day-to-day activities and operations of the primate areas.  The successful candidate will have several years of supervisory experience, the ability to work well with a variety of staff and understand AZA guidelines for Best Practices in the management and care of the species in the areas.  The successful candidate will be a positive individual that is capable of working with and further developing the team in the primate areas. This position is under the direction of the Carnivore Curator.  This is a great time to join the Little Rock Zoo team as the Zoo has many exciting changes that will be occurring over the coming years.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the day-to-day activities and operations of the primate areas to ensure the proper husbandry, enrichment, training and other activities are provided to the animals in compliance with all AZA guidelines
  • Assigns, prioritizes and monitors the work activities of assigned personnel; provides guidance and direction to assigned personnel to promote staff development and ensures personnel receives training relative to appropriate animal care.
  • Works closely with all personnel and serves as a backup to daily care as required.
  • Conducts regular meetings with assigned personnel to discuss the ongoing needs of animals, special projects and related activities within the primate areas and ensures personnel’s daily work activities are reflective of the mission and vision of the Little Rock Zoo and encourages the creation of a positive and safe environment for employees, animals and guests of the Zoo.
  • Provides assistance to the Curator in the development, maintenance and monitoring of Standard Operating Procedures; provides assistance to Animal Keepers to set and implement goals and objectives; recommends new procedures and methods for improving efficiency and effectiveness of daily activities.
  • Serves as a member of the animal management team to cooperatively develop and implement a comprehensive collection plan for the Little Rock Zoo; oversees and coordinates animal acquisitions and dispositions of the animal collection based on the Zoo’s collection plan, SSP and TAG recommendations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of primate behavior and diets of species within the animal collection
  • Knowledge of enrichment and training guidelines for primates
  • Knowledge of handling of primates
  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques and team building
  • Skill in care of primates and in administering prescribed meds to animals.
  • Ability to assign, prioritize and monitor the work activities of assigned personnel
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Animal Husbandry or related field, four (4) years of experience in the care of apes, monkeys and lemurs. Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
