Animal Keeper

The Animal Keeper performs tasks associated with the husbandry and maintenance of native and exotic animals in an education- and conservation-oriented zoological park.  

Position requires performance of the following activities. 

  • Clean exhibits, holding pens and zoo grounds.
  • Prepare established diets and feed animals.
  • Observe, evaluate and report animal behavior and conditions on a daily basis.
  • Maintain exhibits, animal areas and associated fixtures and grounds.
  • Report maintenance needs and perform maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and implement zoo-wide and area emergency procedures.
  • Perform routine animal handling.
  • Assist the veterinary staff in capture and restraint, administration of prescribed medications and procedures as necessary.
  • Implement behavioral enrichment for the collection.
  • Participate in approved animal training programs.
  • Interact with zoo visitors through animal presentations, scheduled and informal keeper talks and general, positive guest experience.
  • Work cooperatively with other zoo departments.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work in a team setting with a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrate initiative and motivation to learn and complete projects.
  • Participate in regular Animal Care team meetings and trainings.
  • Provide information to the team and supervisors in a timely and professional manner.
  • Report issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of and a history with operant conditioning techniques.

 

Experience Required

•Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, or related field required. Advanced degree in animal sciences, biology, wildlife management or equivalent combination of training and experience. •Minimum one to two years, comparable level experience in a zoo environment •Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments •Possess a valid driver’s license.

•Physical Demands: While performing the job duties of this job, the employee is always required to : walk ; sit; stand ; use hands to fingers; handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk or hear. Employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to drive Zoo vehicles. •Work Environment : while performing the job duties of this job you are often required to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions. You can be bitten, scratched, kicked, or otherwise harmed by frightened or wild animals that aren't accustomed to human contact. Caution and skill can help keep you safe
